About the role
What to Expect
Tesla’s Castings controls team is looking for highly motivated and skilled controls engineer to support our Cyber Cab production needs. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in industrial automation, with a focus on Siemens PLC systems (TIA Portal), communications architecture, and integration with Fanuc robotics, vision systems, and databases. This person must be capable of collaborating with cross-functional teams and shop managers in a high-volume casting environment. The successful candidate will have knowledge of die casting and laser trim systems, as well as exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and management skills, demonstrating the ability to be an innovator and change agent. Candidates must be available to work any shift—day, night, and/or weekends—to support Tesla production needs.
What You’ll Do
- Develop programming standards for PLC and automated systems (Siemens TIA Portal); back up and maintain all equipment programs (PLC, HMI, robot, and vision)
- Shop lead for controls projects and installations on production equipment (Idra DCMs and laser trim); oversee maintenance, electrical, and PLC work and verify documentation
- Support and assist the maintenance team in troubleshooting difficult breakdowns and chronic equipment failures
- Act as shop liaison for MES development and implementation, including Ignition, Python, and MySQL scripting for product information tracking
- Instruct and manage supplier and equipment buyoffs; conduct risk assessments and implement findings
- HMI programming and system development; integrate and support vision systems (Cognex, Keyence, Mech-Mind)
- Review and buy off electrical drawings from contractors; support industrial electrical troubleshooting from schematics
What You’ll Bring
- Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering or equivalent relevant industry experience, with 4+ years of extensive experience with industrial equipment controls, interfaces, and communication protocols
- Experience with Idra die cast equipment is highly desired; automotive or industrial manufacturing background preferred
- Must be proficient in Siemens PLC programming, troubleshooting, and configuration (TIA Portal required); HMI programming skills
- Experience with Fanuc robot programming, backup, and restoration
- Vision systems background (Cognex, Keyence, and/or Mech-Mind); familiarity with Ignition, Python, and MySQL scripting
- Strong industrial electrical background with the ability to read and interpret electrical schematics; excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must be comfortable working in harsh conditions (hot/cold) around molten metal and available to work any shift (day/night) and/or weekends to support Tesla production needs
