What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a technically strong and execution-focused Sr. Equipment Engineer to lead the design, deployment, sustainment, and continuous improvement of Automated Mobile Robots (AMRs) and material conveyance systems supporting factory operations. This role owns equipment engineering across autonomous transport, tugger systems, dock automation, charging infrastructure, and supporting material flow hardware, ensuring safety, reliability, and scalability across the factory.
What You’ll Do
- Lead engineering, deployment, commissioning, and optimization of AMRs, AGVs, tugger systems, dock automation, and charging infrastructure. Define equipment specifications, layouts, interface requirements, and safety envelopes
- Support FAT/SAT, commissioning, and ramp-up of new equipment and automation systems. Define mission logic, traffic control, charging strategies, and zone layouts for AMR fleets
- Validate equipment-to-system logic including task triggers, load verification, exception handling, and telemetry feedback. Collaborate with Controls, IT, and Systems teams to integrate equipment using PLCs, MES/WMS, OPC-UA, MQTT, or REST APIs
- Support simulation and digital twin modeling to validate throughput, congestion, and recovery scenarios. Own lifecycle strategy for AMRs, conveyors, carts, racks, chargers, and dock equipment
- Develop preventive maintenance plans, spare parts strategies, and service intervals. Track and improve equipment KPIs including uptime, MTBF, MTTR, and OEE
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA). Develop technical RFQs, evaluate vendors, and lead equipment validation activities
- Own vendor performance for quality, delivery, serviceability, and reliability. Provide day-to-day technical guidance to maintenance technicians and operators
- Develop SOPs, standard work, training materials, and safety documentation. Partner cross-functionally with Manufacturing, MFE, Facilities, Quality, Safety, Logistics, and NPI
What You’ll Bring
- Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or Industrial Engineering, or equivalent experience
- 8+ years of experience in equipment or automation engineering in manufacturing or logistics environments
- Demonstrated experience deploying and sustaining AMR/AGV fleets (e.g., OTTO, MiR, or similar)
- Strong working knowledge of PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Beckhoff) and automation systems
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and ability to read technical schematics and layouts
- Experience with CMMS, telematics, MES/WMS, and reliability programs
- Experience with charging infrastructure and forklift-reduction initiatives
- Familiarity with Lean, TPM, Six Sigma, MTBF/MTTR metrics
- Comfortable supporting off-shift or ramp-period operations as needed
