Duties include heavy welding and fabrication as required to make or repair component parts for railroad maintenance equipment. Requires the ability to operate shop equipment such as drill presses, punch, shear, bender, plate burning machine and all types of power and hand tools. Candidates should have fully competent welding skills using mig, electric stick, and oxy-fuel processes with a variety of metals and be able to work from or without mechanical drawings. A current or recent welder certification is desirable. Journeyman Blacksmiths must have a minimum of 3 years related experience. Journeyman status is preferred, but will consider those with less experience to fill student blacksmith positions

Work Environment

  • Able to work inside/outside and be on your feet daily
  • Must be committed to working safely and wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Environment: Shop/Yard
  • Work on and around heavy equipment

Minimum Qualification:

  • High School/GED
  • 21 years of age or older
  • Read and understand schematic drawings

Skills and Abilities:

  • Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications-both general and technical)
  • Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)
  • Reasoning skills (problem solving and troubleshooting skills)
