Join the future of news
We’re on a mission to deliver riveting storytelling for all of America. At The Washington Post, you’ll help reinvent news. Our work is driven by a deep investigative spirit and enhanced by innovation to bring audiences closer to the stories that matter most.
About Our Team
The Washington Post is powered by the passion and talent of our people. It takes all of us to reinvent news. Beyond our award-winning Newsroom and Opinions teams, we work across many departments, including Brand & Events, Communications, Customer Care, Engineering & Product, Finance, Human Resources, Legal, Marketing & Advertising, Print Operations, and Sales.
Why This Role Matters
The Lead Global Mobility Specialist plays a critical role in managing The Washington Post’s international workforce. Reporting to Director, Total Rewards, you will shape and evolve the frameworks, policies, and programs that support employees across multiple countries. Operating with a high degree of independence, you will serve as the organization’s subject matter expert on global mobility, immigration, and international HR operations. You will influence decision-making across HR and business leadership, driving operational excellence, mitigating risk, and strengthening global workforce practices. Your work will directly impact the organization’s ability to effectively manage and support a complex, distributed workforce.
What motivates you
-
You have a proven track record of influencing others by building collaborative work relationships based on mutual trust and respect.
-
You over-communicate to make sure that everyone is clear about processes, roles and responsibilities, timelines, and next steps.
-
You may not have experience with each country, but you know which questions to ask, how to go about doing your research, and how to apply your international background and HR best practices to solve the company’s specific problems.
-
You are a quick learner and can apply your knowledge and skills to make the next project run faster, smoother, and more efficiently. You are proactive and anticipate issues before they arise.
-
You are a task master and proficient in creating project and actions plans. You derive a deep sense of satisfaction from completing things on time (or ahead of time!) and crossing them off your to-do list. You are generous with sharing your knowledge and documenting your work.
How You'll Support The Mission
-
Act as a key advisor to HR and business leaders on international workforce strategy, employment structures, and risk management.
-
Own and enhance the end-to-end experience for international employees, ensuring consistency, clarity, and operational excellence in hiring, onboarding, immigration, and off-boarding processes.
-
Act as a project manager for a cross-functional team consisting of HR, Tax, Finance, Risk Management, Payroll and client groups (Newsroom, Sales and Engineering) by developing action plans for each country’s expansion, employee relocations, or entities’ closures documenting roles and responsibilities, running regular team meetings, tracking costs, facilitating information collection and dissemination, ensuring adherence to deadlines, and communicating with impacted employees and hiring managers.
-
Ensure that The Washington Post is compliant with national and international labor laws by monitoring countries’ employment laws, immigration laws, and compensation practices.
-
Establish standards and best practices that ensure consistency, scalability, and compliance across all international operations, including shared tools and resources for international HR operations, such as project plans, checklists, knowledge databases, and standard operating procedures.
-
Monitor and assess changes in global mobility trends and immigration regulations, proactively recommending and implementing updates to policies and practices.
-
Ensure timely processing of visa and green card cases by liaising with sponsored employee, employee’s manager, department head, general counsel, and immigration counsel.
-
Monitor and assess changes in global mobility trends and immigration regulations, proactively recommending and implementing updates to policies and practices.
-
Establish clear communication frameworks that enable employees and managers to effectively navigate international HR and mobility processes.
-
Provide strategic input into total rewards approaches, ensuring alignment with local market practices and organizational objectives. Own international benefits, including annual renewals, employee communications, and vendor payments.
-
Manage immigration and international legal counsel relationships.
The Skills and Experience You Bring
-
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, International Business, Industrial & Labor Relations or related field
