Our working model
At Smokeball, we believe there is nothing more powerful than a community of people coming together to work on a product that they, and our clients, love. When it comes to working as a community, we see the value in both coming together and allowing our “Smokeballers” the flexibility that remote work offers.
All Chicago employees are in the office on Wednesdays and Thursdays. While our office is open 5 days a week, we allow you to choose what works best for you on Monday, Tuesday and Friday.
Our office is in the heart of the Loop within 10 minutes of the Metra and all “EL” trains. And, we have lots (and lots) of snacks.
The Role:
We're on the hunt for experienced attorneys and paralegals who are interested in making a transition to the exciting world of legal tech. Smokeball is proud to have many employees who used to practice law, and those employees have found a lot of success across the business in sales, client management, client support, and a variety of other functions.
If you're interested in making the transition from working at a law firm, to selling the best legal product in the world to law firms, then we encourage you to submit your resume.
What You Bring:
- 2+ years as a practicing attorney or paralegal at law firm with 10+ attorneys.
- Proven ability to communicate with all levels of staff at a law firm, from the office manager to the managing partner
- Strong negotiation skills and the ability to own challenging conversations
- Genuine desire to interact and connect with lawyers
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, both internal and external
- Knowledge of law firms and the legal world
- Strong business acumen
- Time management and organization skills are critical
- Ability and willingness to travel at least 25%

CaretLegal v. Smokeball
I have been with CaretLegal for 7 years now and it has worked pretty well for my needs. I have a small family law firm and we generally use Caret for our matters, email, billing and trust accounting. I don’t use their business accounting because it is hot garbage and we use NetDocuments for our DMS. I feel like we are not capturing all of our time and the NetDocuments integration has stopped working properly so I am considering a change. I have read good things and bad things about Smokeball.

Worldox to Smokeball conversion, or other viable offerings?
One of my smaller clients, a 5 man law firm, has been using Worldox since its inception. The firm was bought out by a larger firm down-state a couple years ago. With recent fears Worldox is going to somehow implode at the end of the year, there has been discussion to transition the data out. I've advised the small firm to continue to use Worldox, as its self hosted and maintained on VMs I manage for them. The lawyers using it are in their 70s are will be retiring soon anyway. MyCase Alternatives
Want to start this off by saying that I love MyCase…when it works. I use it for case management, accounting, advance document automation, and website hosting. I bought into the ecosystem from the get go when creating my firm, and it has really helped in speeding things up. However, I have been having a lot of issues lately with their document automation glitching, and this is causing huge issues for me. My practice is built on being able to automate documents to speed up workflow, and this g
