Project Overview – Lázaro Cárdenas, México
APM Terminals is undertaking a major expansion project at its terminal in Lázaro Cárdenas, México. The project aims to increase capacity, modernize infrastructure, and improve customer experience through technologically advanced terminal expansion.
Job Summary
The Civil Engineer – Wharf / Quay / Marine is responsible for overseeing the design, construction, and delivery of civil works related to quay walls, berths, and marine infrastructure within the terminal expansion project.
This role ensures that all civil works are executed in accordance with project scope, safety standards, quality requirements, and budget constraints.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and manage all design aspects related to civil works packages, including Employer’s Requirements, FEED, tender designs, and detailed designs.
- Lead on-site construction activities related to quay and civil infrastructure works.
- Manage consultants, contractors, and all parties involved in the civil works package.
- Ensure compliance with APM Terminals safety standards and promote continuous safety improvement.
- Coordinate with other asset package managers (Automation, Equipment, Electrical, IT) to manage dependencies.
- Manage changes to scope, schedule, and budget in coordination with Project Controls.
- Ensure delivery of all project outputs, including design submissions, as-built documentation, and O&M manuals.
Safety
- Act as a visible safety leader on-site.
- Ensure all stakeholders maintain safety as a top priority.
- Monitor compliance with APM Terminals safety policies.
Construction Controls & Governance
- Implement project controls and procedures.
- Track progress against baseline schedules.
- Identify delays and propose corrective actions.
- Manage risks and maintain project risk registers.
- Ensure best-in-class site management practices.
Stakeholder Management & Communication
- Maintain clear communication within the project team.
- Engage regularly with contractors and consultants.
- Address issues and disputes proactively.
- Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Interfaces & Collaboration
- Work closely with Interface, Equipment, Electrical, and IT Managers.
- Ensure alignment across project dependencies.
- Coordinate with global engineering teams to ensure compliance with standards.
Reporting Line
Reports to the Civil Package Manager (on-site).
Location: Lázaro Cárdenas, México.
Qualifications & Experience
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
Experience:
- 7–10 years of experience in civil engineering and/or marine construction projects.
- Experience in container terminals or large infrastructure projects.
- Experience in site or package management with exposure to project controls.
- Knowledge of civil works contracts (FIDIC or equivalent).
- Experience managing large-scale construction projects with responsibility for safety, schedule, and budget.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong technical engineering foundation in design and construction.
- Team player with leadership and motivation capabilities.
- Strong communication skills; advanced English required.
- Results-oriented and self-motivated.
- High attention to quality and detail.
- Ability to work in multicultural environments.
