The Director EH&S for the Geel MAKE site, part of the Synthetic Manufacturing platform, is responsible for overseeing and managing the EHS activities across the site, both internal and external network, with a focus on ensuring compliance with EH&S regulations/standards and the safety of all employees, visitors, and contractors. This individual will lead a local team of EH&S professionals, with an emphasis on building efficiencies through the alignment of processes, procedures, and programs to support a dynamic Synthetic Manufacturing business.

Director EH&S is accountable for the effective alignment, deployment, and execution of EH&S strategies, policies, and standards. This individual is also responsible for the overall performance of the site including compliance, risk reduction and management initiatives. This role requires a change leader who creates heightened organizational consciousness of EH&S issues to deeply embed a strong EH&S culture across the organization.

Tasks/Duties/Responsibilities

Represents EHS with internal stakeholders (engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, facilities, etc.), external bodies and local/national authorities to advance site and enterprise objectives. Develop and implement site EH&S business strategies and align the business with enterprise EH&S goals and objectives, which include budget management, building organizational models and competency to align with the risk factors.

Cultivates deep expertise and fosters continuous improvement within the site EH&S organization, processes and the digital ecosystem in execution of the EH&S strategy, management system and assurance processes.

Leads partnership with site leadership to define and implement a strategic EHS roadmap that addresses program gaps and ensures regulatory compliance.

Accountable for the site EHS function, including operating and CAPEX budgets, resource allocation and performance against financial targets.

Builds, coaches and develops the site EHS team, sets objectives, conducts performance reviews, drives professional development plans and contributes to succession and compensation decisions.

Owns the design, deployment and continuous improvement of EHS management systems, procedures and best practices across controlled sites, identifying and delivering cross-site efficiency opportunities.

Chairs and facilitates site EHS committees and cross-functional teams to ensure effective program implementation and engagement.

Leads hazard and risk management activities, including change management processes, reducing operational risk and streamline the EHS program for leaner, more effective delivery.

Maintains local ISO and program certifications by ensuring EHS systems are aligned with relevant standards and audit ready.

Leads investigations of incidents and near-misses, drives root-cause analysis, and ensures preventive and corrective actions are implemented and tracked.

Overseeing CAPA governance, identifies opportunities to optimize the CAPA process and informs leadership of significant non-conformities or anomalies.

Executes the global audit program and leads participation in system and technical audits; ensures timely, robust corrective actions and verification of closure when hazards or non-conformities are identified.

Champions innovation and cultural change to strengthen safety culture and overall EHS effectiveness.

Owns the site Emergency Response Plan, ensures drills and reviews are performed as scheduled, and serves as Incident Commander / Plant Emergency Officer during crises.

Drive deployment of enterprise and platform initiatives at site level.

Participate in site LT, strategic planning and decision-making processes, working collaboratively with Sr. Leaders in the Pharm. business & EH&S organization to achieve organizational objectives.

Assures monitoring of new legislation and emerging issues that could impact the site business and ensure full compliance in a cost competitive manner.

Develops and implements a site training strategy that addresses regulatory and operational risks for target audiences, including onboarding for new hires.

Manages EHS aspects of external manufacturers, suppliers and contractor programs through close collaboration with procurement and operations.

Required minimum education: university/bachelor’s degree other:

Required Years of Related Experience: 10-15 years

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

CERTIFIED Preventionist as per Legal Belgium requirements Strong communicator who is credible and self-assured; strong technical skills with the ability to explain complex issues and requirements in an easily understood manner; ability to negotiate with and influence key business leaders. Ability to work in a matrix, team-oriented environment. Highly developed interpersonal and cross-cultural skills. Strong written and oral English communication skills. Strong experience working in Microsoft Office. Experience working in CURVE – J&J EH&S Data Management tool.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Preferred minimum education: master’s degree other: psm expertise

Preferred Area of Study: Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Engineering or related EH&S discipline

Preferred Related Industry Experience (if applicable): EH&S for Pharmaceutical & Chemistry

Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities:

Experience working with EH&S data and data management systems.

Capability to energize and inspire others towards higher performance and execution.

Passion about the role, a positive “can do” attitude.
