About the job

Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.

As a System Design Engineer, you will take a holistic approach to product development, ensuring all components from the hardware and operating system to the software and development infrastructure work together seamlessly.

ChromeOS delivers quality computing at scale to provide universal and unfettered access to information, entertainment, and tools. Our mission is to empower anyone to create and access information freely through fast, secure, simple, and intelligent computing.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build the systems, tools, and automated processes that our engineers and partners rely on for the entire device life-cycle, including bring-up, configuration, and management.

  • Develop and drive technical road-map and goals to ensure the expansion of the ChromeOS and Aluminum device ecosystem.

  • Serve as a technical liaison between internal teams (e.g., Hardware, OS, Software) and external partners (e.g., OEMs) to deliver well-integrated product designs that meet both technical requirements and partner demands.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronics or Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 2 years of experience in development, testing and deployment of consumer electronics or embedded systems.

  • Experience with Linux development environments and Git or Gerrit.

Preferred qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electrical, Electronics or Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Experience developing low-level firmware, Linux kernel device drivers, and Board Support Package (BSPs) within open-source projects.

  • Knowledge of system architecture and system design.
