Our tax function is constantly evolving, and it’s here you’ll find everything you need to grow as we do. Handling tax in such a large, sophisticated organization takes more than just a technical understanding of current tax practices. As a Sales and Use Tax Manager, we will look to you to apply your knowledge to a wide range of tax areas and processes, devising strategic outcomes for some very complex issues. You can expect to advise on indirect tax regulatory changes; design strategies, operating models, processes, and compliance frameworks that raise efficiency and meet requirements. Identify opportunities for tax optimization, credits and refund recovery, exposure reduction; manage strategies, compliance, remediation, controversies, and corrective filings. Support process review and technology transformation.

  • Translate regulatory changes into practical compliance and reporting solutions.

  • Implement operating models and frameworks across the indirect tax lifecycle.

  • Lead optimization, recovery, and exposure‑reduction initiatives.

Your key responsibilities

Lead workstream delivery, track status and deliverables, and participate in client working sessions. Identify opportunities for additional services, contribute to RFPs, manage engagement economics, and implement resource plans and budgets. Guide teams, drive improvement, and recommend solutions by interpreting internal/external issues. Travel required regularly for external clients.

  • Develop solutions to complex problems and select suitable methods and criteria.

  • Recommend policy changes and establish procedures for your area or function.

  • Apply depth of expertise to guide others toward quality solutions.

  • Analyze an evolving portfolio of complex tax operations to provide meaningful business insights

  • Identify potential opportunities and risks and communicating these to our clients

  • Learn and researching current market trends, to maintain your credibility as a trusted advisor

  • Develop clear, intelligent plans and approaches to improve our clients’ tax activities

  • Research our clients’ business operations and building long-lasting relationships to tailor your advice to their specific needs

  • Manage a motivated team of professionals, guaranteeing they have the skills, knowledge and opportunities to reach their full potential

Skills and attributes for success

Client‑facing delivery leadership, disciplined quality and risk management, continuous improvement, and the ability to guide teams toward outcomes. Communicate with impact and bring commercial astuteness to drive growth.

  • Manage and deliver processes, solutions, and projects with a focus on quality and risk.

  • Lead or supervise professionals to deliver complex technical initiatives with accountability for results.

  • Interpret internal/external issues to recommend innovative, practical solutions.

  • Meet locally set performance metrics across client service, quality, sales, solution development, and teaming.

To qualify for the role, you must have

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or a related discipline

  • A minimum of 5 years professional knowledge in a broad range of sales and use tax processes, concepts and tools

  • An achieved CPA qualification, state bar membership, certification as a member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation or CMI designation

  • Experience managing budgets, people and projects

  • A proven record of excellence in a professional services or tax organization

  • Technical writing and research experience in a tax context

  • The ability to prioritize when working on multiple complex projects

  • Strong influencing skills, and the confidence to question existing processes

  • Willingness to travel as needed, and working in a balanced hybrid environmen

  • Tax legislation and impact assessment.

  • Indirect tax refund and recovery review.

  • Tax planning and optimization.

  • Audit quality and remediation techniques.

  • Global mindset

Ideally, you’ll also have

  • Experience leading workstreams across planning, execution, and closure.

  • Contribution to RFP responses and sales growth.

  • Practical management of engagement economics and resource planning.

  • Daily participation in client working sessions and strong stakeholder management.

  • We offer a comprehensive compensation and benefits package where you’ll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to the business. The base salary range for this job in all geographic locations in the US is $105,100 to $192,600. The base salary range for New York City Metro Area, Washington State and California (excluding Sacramento) is $126,100 to $218,900. Individual salaries within those ranges are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills and geography. In addition, our Total Rewards package includes medical and dental coverage, pension and 401(k) plans, and a wide range of paid time off options.

  • Join us in our team-led and leader-enabled hybrid model. Our expectation is for most people in external, client serving roles to work together in person 60% of the time over the course of an engagement, project or year.

  • Under our flexible vacation policy, you’ll decide how much vacation time you need based on your own personal circumstances. You’ll also be granted time off for designated EY Paid Holidays, Winter/Summer breaks, Personal/Family Care, and other leaves of absence when needed to support your physical, financial, and emotional well-being.
