Introduction to the Team:Our Technology Team partners with teams across Expedia Group to create innovative products, services, and tools to deliver high-quality experiences for travelers, partners, and our employees. A singular technology platform powered by data and machine learning provides secure, differentiated, and personalized experiences that drive loyalty and traveler satisfaction.

As a Senior Engineering Manager, you will lead single or multiple engineering teams responsible for Expedia Group’s observability platform. You will combine
strong people leadership with deep technical judgment to shape the strategy, architecture, and execution of a centralized, scalable, and cost-efficient observability ecosystem.

Your teams will deliver the capabilities that enable thousands of engineers across Expedia Group to build, operate, and understand highly distributed systems with confidence.

In this role, you will:

  • Build, Lead and Scale Observability Platform Engineering Team

  • Direct and develop single or multiple engineering teams responsible for telemetry pipelines, data storage, visualization tooling, and developer experience.

  • Build a culture of engineering excellence grounded in reliability, automation, and continuous improvement.

  • Oversee the design and delivery of highly scalable and resilient pipelines for logs, metrics, and traces and guide teams through architectural decisions as we scale to 10× current data volume while maintaining performance and cost efficiency.

  • Contribute to buildout or new distributed tracing platform using Open Telemetry.

  • Lead the organizational rollout of Open Telemetry across thousands of services.

  • Establish best practices, automated configurations, and shared tools to ensure consistent and frictionless instrumentation.

  • Establish and drive Governance & Platform SLOs for next gen platform

  • Partner with product and finance to define governance frameworks, cost allocation models, and resource optimization strategies.

  • Ensure the observability platform meets its own SLOs and delivers reliability at scale.

  • Strengthen Infrastructure Automation & Operational Excellence

  • Drive the adoption of Infrastructure as Code (K8s, Service Mesh, Terraform, Cross plane) and automated operational workflows.

  • Lead initiatives to eliminate manual toil, automate provisioning, and improve incident response.

  • Build, Mentor, and Develop Engineering Talent

  • Grow high performing engineers and emerging leaders through coaching, career development, and regular feedback.

  • Run architecture reviews, drive technical alignment, and ensure strong engineering fundamentals across teams.

  • Lead Production Readiness & Incident Response

  • Serve as executive escalation partner for complex production issues related to observability services.

  • Foster a blameless culture of learning and data driven improvement.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in enterprise applications, including at least 8+ years designing, building, and operating distributed systems and observability platforms (logs, metrics, traces) in complex, multi-entity environments.

  • 5+ years of people leadership experience managing software development and/or command center / observability teams, with accountability for delivery, quality, and people outcomes.

  • Hands-on experience with at least one major observability platform (e.g., Datadog, Splunk, Grafana-based stack), covering end-to-end lifecycle from design and implementation through operations and continuous improvement

  • Strong understanding of cloud-native architectures (Kubernetes, Docker, microservices) on at least one major cloud provider (AWS preferred), and proficiency in at least one modern programming language (Go, Java, or Python)

  • Proven track record delivering highly available, reliable, and scalable services and leading complex, multi-team programs in an Agile environment using Jira/Confluence or equivalent, with exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct experience leading Command Center / NOC-style observability solution using Grafana LGTM stack, Click House, Prometheus, Victoria Metrics, an Open Telemetry for large-scale, distributed systems.

  • Deep functional understanding of multiple observability platforms (such a Datadog and Splunk) and integrating them across heterogeneous, cloud-native application estates.

  • Experience implementing observability for Finance or other regulated systems including SOX, ITGCs, access controls, change management, and audit/testing evidence requirements.

  • Demonstrated ability to shape engineering culture—raising code quality and observability standards, driving SLO/SLI practices, and mentoring senior engineers and analysts across both technical and functional career paths

  • Track record of building inclusive, high-performing teams and operating effectively with senior Finance and Technology leaders, architects, and vendor partners in large-scale transformation programs.

  • Hands-on leadership in incident management and on-call, including designing for resilience, running post-incident reviews, and using telemetry to continuously improve reliability and developer experience.

  • Active engagement in the observability community (e.g., contributions to open-source observability projects, participation in CNCF/Open Telemetry/Grafana communities) is a strong plus.
