MTS 1 Software Engineer – Backend

About the Role:

At e Bay, we facilitate connections between buyers and sellers worldwide using efficient, dependable technology. As a Staff Software Engineer within the Buyer Payments team, you'll create backend systems supporting Checkout and Orders in a leading online marketplace. You'll manage vital services, promote technical expertise, and enhance e Bay's global commerce platform.

Responsibilities

• Design & Development: Convert business demands into durable, scalable, and reliable backend solutions through the application of modern technologies such as Java, GraphQL, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and messaging frameworks.
• Ownership & Delivery: Take full responsibility for subsystems within a large domain — from design and development through testing, deployment, observability, and monitoring.
• Technical Influence: Act as a key technical contributor and advisor within your team, influencing design and architecture decisions to ensure scalability, reliability, and performance.
• Continuous Improvement: Identify areas of change and proactively design flexibility into systems to enhance engineering velocity and adaptability.
• Collaboration: Work cross-functionally with product managers, designers, and other engineers to deliver innovative, high-quality features that align with business objectives.
• Quality & Testability: Promote and carry out design guided by information, constructing features that are easy to test and upkeep for quality and ongoing delivery.
• Execution & Mentorship: Break down complex features into deliverable components, resolve blockers, and support others through code reviews, technical guidance, and mentorship.
• Reliability & Support: Participate in release management, site reliability initiatives, and on-call rotations to ensure the availability and performance of an “always-on” 24/7 platform.
• Engineering Excellence: Lead efforts to improve end-to-end testing, CI/CD processes, and overall development velocity across features and services.

Qualifications

Technical Skills:

• Extensive experience with Java, GraphQL, Spring/Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, and messaging platforms like Kafka, RabbitMQ, or equivalents.
• Experience in building data-driven applications using RDBMS, NoSQL, and Elastic Search.
• Verified skill in providing high-quality software in fast-paced agile contexts following TDD, CI/CD, and automation protocols.
• Familiarity with Shift Left testing approaches and modern DevOps principles.

Experience

• 6 years of experience developing, maintaining, and scaling backend systems in production environments.
• Demonstrated expertise in designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems.
• Strong understanding of software lifecycle management, system reliability, and observability.

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
