Con Edison's Protective System Testing (PST) team is responsible for the protection and control of the electrical system that powers one of the largest cities in the world. Our Electrical Technicians play a dynamic and vital role in ensuring that our Substation Protection and Control systems meet industry standards and continuously work on new and exciting technology to upgrade our systems. They work on a variety of projects and equipment including installation and testing of large power transformers and circuit breakers and microprocessor-based relay installations, to name a few.

Required Education/Experience- Associate's Degree Candidates for this position must possess an Associate's Degree in Electrical Technology, or related field of study. Or High School diploma with 2 years of academic programs completed in a Bachelors of Engineering program. Or High School diploma with 2 years of military academic programs to include one of the following: Nuclear Electronics Technician, Nuclear Electrician, and Aviation Electronics Technician (or applicable). and Strong knowledge of basic AC and DC electrical power theory and circuit analysis, including three phase AC power systems, as well as a strong working knowledge of mathematics and the ability to perform calculations involving basic trigonometry and vector analysis. Candidates must have knowledge and experience with computer systems and are able to use these to perform automated testing, as well as prepare spreadsheets and technical reports.

Licenses and Certifications- Driver's License Required

Physical Demands- Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold

  • Perform heavy manual labor, i.e. push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
  • Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
  • Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
  • Ability to climb in and out of manholes and excavations
  • Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
  • Work with equipment with a manufacturer weight rating of 350lbs
  • Use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 375lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25lbs of clothing and equipment

Additional Physical Demands- Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.

Core Responsibilities- Learn how to test complex circuits, read AC and DC schematics, interpret and use wiring diagrams, and understand microprocessor relay logic.

  • Participate in extensive training program consisting of in-house classroom and lab training at our state-of-the-art Learning Center and hands-on training in the field.
  • Learn about the operation, maintenance, and testing of protective relay systems, and transmission and distribution equipment.
  • Work on electrical construction projects, performing acceptance testing, and commissioning new protection systems and equipment.
  • Perform testing, troubleshooting and repairs on protective relays and system, substation equipment, control systems and telephones lines in substation and other locations.
  • Able to travel and work in any location within the Company and service territory.
  • Ensures that all work is being performed in effective and efficient manner.
  • Ensures that the Human Performance Improvement (HPI) tools are incorporated into the plan and daily work activities.
