Job Summary:

Caterpillar is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team focused on genset applications. This role is critical in delivering high-performance, compliant, and manufacturable solutions. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in mechanical design and a collaborative mindset to work effectively with global teams
Role Definition
Serve as a technical individual contributor with full accountability for the end‑to‑end design and development of components and sub-systems for large (>2 MW) diesel genset packages. Responsible to deliver complex, high‑impact engineering initiatives, driving technical excellence from concept definition through detailed design, rigorous validation, and successful global production release.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and development of components and sub systems for Genset package from concept selection through detailed design, ensuring compliance with Caterpillar’s engineering standards and regional regulations.

  • Technical Expertise: †Demonstrate deep expertise in engineering fundamentals, structural design, and fabrication; define appropriate FEA inputs and interpret analysis results to translate findings into robust, production-ready design solutions.

  • Manufacturing: Strong knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), material selection, welding, engineering drawings, manufacturing processes and package Bill of Material (BOM).

  • Interface & Cross Functional Collaboration: Support interface management with global, cross-functional engineering teams and project leads to ensure end-to-end package fitment, seamless system integration, and functional integrity across the product lifecycle.

  • Design Optimization: Apply engineering principles and analytical insights to optimize designs for manufacturability, performance, durability, cost effectiveness , and ease of assembly.

  • Experience required

  • Strong engineering fundamentals, including hands-on design calculations, structural analysis, and the ability to interpret and apply FEA results to develop robust, compliant designs.

  • Proven expertise in structural and fabrication design, including sheet metal design and integration of large assemblies.

  • Demonstrated experience delivering manufacturing ready designs, with solid knowledge of GD&T, materials, welding practices, engineering drawings, and BOM development.

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modelling, detailing, and design validation (Creo or equivalent) within an industrial product development environment.

  • Project management knowledge with demonstrated experience supporting or owning complex, high-impact engineering designs in regulated, global manufacturing organizations, consistently meeting quality, cost, and schedule commitments.

  • Bachelor’s/master's degree in mechanical engineering with minimum experience of 4 - 6 years in relevant field.

  • 1+ years of experience working on sheet metal design and handling large assemblies.

  • Performs manipulations on design objects, such as changing projections and managing drawing layers.

  • Compares and contrasts uses of bird's-eye views and worm's-eye views.
    Product Design
  • MFG: Knowledge of processes, approaches, tools and techniques of product design; ability to convert customer and market requirements into product design.

  • Develops improvement plans for senior management and evaluates the outcome of the design against the functionality.
  • Advises others on the development of multiple products and their functionality.
  • Trains others on advanced tools and approaches of product design.
