Technology & Operations

The Global Client Services (GCS) team is responsible for delivering flexible, scalable, and tech-enabled client service, working in partnership with our client businesses and teams across the firm. Our functional teams include: Global Onboarding (Implementation and Contracting), Investor Services (Client Order Management and Service Centers), and Transfer Agency Services.

The Onboarding team is part of Black Rock’s Global Client Services division and encompasses both the Implementation & Contracting functions responsible for bringing new client and business opportunities onto the Black Rock platform across the firm’s various business channels. The team plays an active and visible role with our clients and works closely with the Client & Investment businesses, Legal, critical operations teams and external services providers to deliver a superior “One Black Rock” client experience.

Team Overview

The Onboarding-Contracting team (the “Team”) is a team of professionals responsible for driving and completing contract negotiations with clients on behalf of Black Rock’s Institutional Client Business (“ICB”) and US Retail (“USWA”) functions.

The Team partners closely with ICB, Relationship Managers, Legal and Compliance, Onboarding teams and other internal groups to ensure Black Rock’s contracts balance commercial outcomes with appropriate risk management and fiduciary obligations. We cover a broad range of clients including sovereign wealth funds, central banks, pension funds and insurance companies each of whom may transact in different investment strategies, products, instruments and markets offered by Black Rock.

Role Description

  • Drive the contracting process from initial drafting through negotiation and execution for your portfolio of business
  • Responsible for a client channel, supervise the book of work for that channel including complexity assessment and case assignment, and find opportunities for process and client experience improvements
  • Manage client expectations throughout the negotiation process
  • Facilitate and coordinate with internal stakeholders across functions involved in the contracting process, ensuring their comments flow through to the contract and requisite approvals are obtained
  • Identify issues that are disseminated to potentially impacted internal stakeholders for review, discussion, negotiation and resolution
  • Ensure that all completed contractual documentation is properly filed and circulated to relevant groups
  • Find opportunities for process and client experience improvements
  • Support the sales team with contractual documentation queries
  • Participate in Onboarding initiatives including technology and workflow changes

Experience/Qualifications

  • Proven ability to draft and negotiate complex legal contracts
  • Ability to perform and deliver high quality legal contracts in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven skills in successfully managing competing internal and external demands within compressed timeframes
  • Strong communication skills – written and oral
  • Knowledge of the asset management industry (fund types, client base and strategies, operational set up and products) and applicable law and regulations
  • Comfort in working with multiple systems to track and manage the contract negotiation lifecycle
  • JD or equivalent experience

Proficiencies

  • Ability to independently manage tasks and workload with some guidance and oversight
  • Ability to think out of the box, to navigate complex internal processes and functions, and be able to offer practical solutions that will be mutually beneficial to both the client and Black Rock
  • Demonstrated ability to balance client needs with Black Rock policies and operational procedures; possess regulatory and technical awareness in order to understand associated risks and provide innovative, risk-free and compliance friendly solutions; enhance the client experience
  • Ability to be a great teammate is crucial
  • Possess the ability to adapt to internal processes and requirements
  • Open to new challenges; able to work effectively and efficiently on multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining the highest standard and attention to detail
  • Strongly proficient in standard software (e.g. Microsoft Office) and interested in new technologies
