This position is responsible for the management of all medical functions of the Australia and New Zealand Affiliate (ANZ) and ensures full strategic, tactical and operational, budget responsibility for the medical ANZ department as well as oversight in pipeline development of the global R&D MSLs. This position builds and leads a team of medical professionals by inspiring and motivating the team, in addition to being a positive change agent who pro-actively disseminates appropriate information to key stakeholders. Establishing and maintaining key peer-to-peer scientific partnerships with thought leaders in alignment with overall Biogen strategy is a core requirement of this role.

The role sits on the affiliate leadership team and guides decision making on pan-affiliate matters such as affiliate strategy, policies, culture and training needs. This role has also a dotted line reporting structure to Head of Medical, APAC

Building and leading a high performing organization(30%)

Overall responsibility for the Australia and New Zealand Medical department including patient services, pipeline planning, medical information & operations, medical managers and medical field teams. Demonstrate inspiring leadership and develop future Medical leaders.

  • Accountable for the medical and scientific strategy, execution and budget management for Biogen Australia and New Zealand
  • Responsible for scientific quality and accuracy of medical and marketing communications
  • Builds and develops a high performing medical team which abide for the high standards of ethics and compliance
  • Identifies and Develops talent within the Medical team and ensure effective succession planning and career development to meet current and future demands
  • Responsible for new therapeutic areas medical development and oversight to R&D field medical activities& planning
  • Drive organisational development and changes in structure in line with business growth
  • Drives innovation, including digital initiatives and leadership at all levels of the organisation
  • Ensures strong affiliate, APAC, BIR and global collaboration between medical organisation and other departments such as Commercial, Strategy and Operational Excellence, Regulatory, Pharmacovigilance, Value & Access, External Affairs, Finance, HR, Legal, Compliance etc.
  • Utilises all tools and data to maximize revenues, to increase and monitor Veeva data excellence and effectiveness
  • Ensure resources are allocated appropriately to deliver on medical activities
  • Provide development ´plans to teams according potential and capabilities
  • Assure the medical team is highly scientific driven and up to date with the scientific advancements to educate HCPs about Biogen products and pipeline

Strategy and strategy implementation/operational excellence(60%)

Ensures the generation of strategic medical plans, aligning as much as possible with global medical strategies and development of medical LCM in ANZ

  • Represent Biogen and its pharmaceutical products to relevant key health care professionals, hospital business managers, national patient organizations and national authorities and pricing authorities as needed
  • Builds and develops strong customer relationships, has a network of HCPs and works in partnership with them to develop services and treatments: Partner and collaborate with local market access to define, establish and execute a coherent local strategic plan that addresses local external stakeholders (payers, HCPs, agencies) needs
  • Responsible to ensure that all promotional material and activities meet the medical/scientific standards of the MA code of conduct and other similar forums where we will conduct business in Australia and New Zealand
  • Lead the medical team providing strategic direction and supporting development to ensure maximum performance and functional excellence
  • Provide input into regional & global medical strategy based on local insights and needs from the Affiliate
  • Ensure all practices comply with Medicines Australia code of conduct and ownership of development and maintenance of local medical SOPs
  • Manage expenses and exercise financial control in conjunction with Finance
  • Participate in relevant industry associations
  • Attendance at state, national and international scientific conferences
  • Involved in the pricing/reimbursement strategy and relevant PBAC/PHARMAC submissions

Leadership team

  • Provides and demonstrates leadership and behaviours in accordance with the Affiliate and Medical BIR Leadership Team expectations and Biogen culture
  • Participates on the Affiliate Leadership Team and in overall management of the Affiliate
  • P&L responsibility for Medical budget
  • Drives culture of transparency and accountability in creation and adherence to policies and SOPs
  • Ensures compliance with Biogen regulations and local laws and Biogen code of business conduct
  • Sets key stretch targets and ensures motivation and compliant attainment of goals

Requirements

Education&Experience

  • Masters University Degree preferably in a life sciences subject, PhD/MD preferred
  • 10+ years in pharmaceutical or related industry; 5-7+ years of Management Experience
  • Previous management and leadership experience in medical affairs
