Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.
Hardware Engineering is a diverse, and collaborative group of electrical, mechanical, reliability, software and vehicle engineers. We design, build, and perfect the products which are the eyes and ears of Waymo's autonomous driving technology, and integrate those products into vehicle platforms. We're looking for curious and talented teammates to keep us moving in the right direction.
In this hybrid role, you will report to a Staff Software Engineer.
You will:
-
Develop high-quality, low-level embedded software for Board Management Controllers (BMCs) to manage and monitor autonomous vehicle hardware (e.g., power, networking, thermal, fault handling).
-
Design, implement and analyze board-level telemetry for design validation and fleet monitoring at scale.
-
Review schematics, diagnose hardware issues, and debug using tools like JTAG, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
-
Participate in cross-functional workflows, including hardware design reviews, requirements definition, and project planning with hardware and systems engineering teams.
You have:
-
Degree (BS, MS) in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.
-
At least 2 years of professional experience developing and debugging low-level software for embedded systems in C/C++.
-
Hands-on experience with hardware communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, and UART.
-
Proficiency with board-level debugging and analysis using tools like JTAG, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
-
Solid understanding of microcontroller and microprocessor architectures.
We prefer:
-
At least 4 years of professional experience in embedded systems development.
-
Experience developing production software in modern C++ (i.e., C++17, C++20, etc.)
-
Experience in board management (power sequencing, voltage rail monitoring, and peripheral management on complex circuit boards.)
-
Experience monitoring a production fleet (data analysis, alerts, etc.)
-
Experience with safety-critical systems / functional safety (e.g., ISO 26262).
-
Experience with cybersecurity (e.g., Secure Boot, SecOC, MACSec).
-
Personal or open-source hardware projects that demonstrate a passion for building and programming electronics.
The expected base salary range for this full-time position is listed below. Actual starting pay will be based on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level. Waymo employees are also eligible to participate in Waymo’s discretionary annual bonus program, equity incentive plan, and generous Company benefits program, subject to eligibility requirements.
