What You Will Do

Work alongside nurses and other health care professionals to provide safe, respectful patient care. You may:

Help patients with bathing, eating, walking, toileting, and other personal care
-
Take vital signs, check blood glucose, obtain weights, and record intake and output
-
Answer call bells, respond to patient needs, and help patients stay safe and comfortable

Observe patients, report changes or concerns to the nurse, and document care
-
Assist with patient transport, meals, supplies, cleaning, stocking, and safety checks

Communicate respectfully, take ownership of assignments, and support the care team
Departments May Include
Oncology • Cardiology • Trauma • Surgical Progressive Care • Neurology • Behavioral Health • Pediatric Acute Care • Observation • Birth Center • Emergency Department

Required

High school diploma or equivalent
-
Ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing

Ability to work respectfully and responsibly as part of a team

Completion of required training, including basic information system training
Experience and training
-
No previous experience is required. Direct patient care experience is preferred but not required. If you do not have previous hospital or prehospital training, you must successfully complete the UPMC patient care technician class or the first year of clinical work in a nursing program.

Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic certification, or enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program, is preferred. Basic computer experience is also preferred. Access to medications is limited to distributing medication to the nurse.
Licenses, Certifications, and Clearances
-
Basic Life Support or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification is required based on the position.

American Heart Association-compliant CPR training, including instruction and a skills demonstration, must be completed within 30 days of hire.

Act 34 clearance is required.

Some departments also require Act 31, Act 33, and Act 73 FBI clearances with applicable renewals.
