UPMC Presbyterian is hiring a full-time Histotechnician or Histotechnologist to support the Histology Lab! This role will be scheduled for daylight shifts with variable start times between 3:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. Monday thru Friday.

UPMC is currently offering a generous sign-on bonus for Histotechnician/Histotechnologists! Sign-On Bonus Details:

  • $15,000 for a 3-year commitment Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. The Histotechnologist role starts at $22.92/hr.Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates complete knowledge of Co Path related to Histology workflow.

  • Complies with all UPMC and departmental policies, procedures and work practices.

  • Demonstrates progression of skills towards working independently in an advanced staining area.

  • Performs ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.

  • Performs QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining

  • Processes and prepares surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping.

  • Embeds and cuts specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.

  • Supports the academic mission of the department.

  • Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department-specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.

  • Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.

  • Maintains instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.

Histotechnician:

  • High school diploma.

  • Completion of the educational requirements needed to take the Histotechnician (HT) exam:

Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years OR;

  • Associate's Degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry.

  • 1 year of clinical laboratory experience post-training is preferred.

Histotechnologist:

  • Completion of the educational requirements needed in order to take the Histotechnologist (HTL) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP):

B.S. Degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnology program within the last 5 years OR;

  • B.S. Degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S., Canada or a CAP/The Joint Commission (JCAHO)/AABB accredited laboratory within the last 10 years.

  • Experience must be under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology) or an appropriately board certified medical scientist.

  • 1 year of full time experience in a histology laboratory preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Am Society Clinical Pathology Histology Technician (HT) certification from ASCP is required within 1 year of hire.

  • American Society for Clinical Pathology
