Patient Care Technician | Transitional Support Unit (4 North) | UPMC Hamot

About 4 North
The Transitional Support Unit (4 North) at UPMC Hamot is an 11-bed unit that provides care for medical and surgical patients who are medically stable and awaiting discharge. This unit offers a unique opportunity for individuals who are passionate about long-term care while gaining experience in an inpatient hospital setting.

Position Highlights

  • Full-Time
  • 50% Day Shift (7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.) and 50% Night Shift (7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.)
  • Every other holiday
  • 72 weekend hours required within a 6-week scheduling period
  • Prior hospital experience preferred

Patient Care Technicians on 4 North play an essential role in supporting patient care and promoting a safe, comfortable environment. Responsibilities include assisting patients with mobility, activities of daily living, personal hygiene, feeding, obtaining vital signs, and performing blood glucose monitoring while working collaboratively with the interdisciplinary care team.

Title and compensation will be determined based on the candidate's education, experience, and qualifications.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct patient care, including assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, transporting, turning, and repositioning patients.

  • Perform UPMC Nursing Assistant core responsibilities, including vital signs, weights, intake and output monitoring, blood glucose testing, specimen collection, Foley care, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, and hospital-acquired condition and patient safety indicator monitoring.

  • Perform advanced patient care tasks based on department needs and competency validation, including phlebotomy/venipuncture, 12-lead EKGs, simple dressings, bladder scans, Foley catheter removal, straight catheterization, peripheral IV removal, point-of-care testing, basic arrhythmia monitoring, and NG tube clamping/removal.

  • Assist with patient procedures and physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. Observe and report changes in patient condition to the registered nurse.

  • Provide patient and family education under the direction of the RN and assist with the application, monitoring, and removal of patient restraints in accordance with hospital policy.

  • Document care in the medical record according to established procedures and complete assigned clerical functions as needed.

  • Contribute to unit operations by responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, transporting patients, and supporting departmental workflow.

  • Ensure equipment malfunctions are reported promptly and collaborate effectively with other departments to maintain quality patient care.

  • Develop and maintain professional working relationships by demonstrating accountability, respect, teamwork, enthusiasm, and commitment to patients and colleagues.

  • Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, workplace safety, and professional conduct while adhering to all hospital policies, procedures, safety standards, and infection prevention protocols.

  • Participate in ongoing learning and professional development by identifying educational needs, seeking feedback, and working to continuously improve performance.

  • Support department-based projects, quality initiatives, and process improvements that promote efficient and effective patient care.

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Must also have either:
    a) 1 Year of general healthcare experience, OR

  • b) 6 months of experience as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion for those with less than 1 year of experience, OR

  • c)enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR

  • d)completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.

  • Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class

  • Successful completion of e Record training.

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire ACLS preferred
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 34
