About the Team

The Platform Engineering team (PE) (Compute, Network, Storage, Reliability and Hardware engineering, Corporate IT, and more) lies within the broader Uber Engineering group. The mission of the team is to "Empower One Uber to innovate by building a world-class foundation that accelerates growth at scale."

The Network Team within PE has ownership over designing, building, operating and developing data center networks, backbone networks, and cloud networks for Uber at a global scale that connects Uber's services to the world.

This role will help guide and lead different teams within Uber to create and extend the physical and cloud architecture, as well as the software-based observability, capacity planning, automation and build platforms. To be successful, you will have both hands-on experience in designing and building networking architecture and infrastructure, to building and guiding the teams that does it at a large scale.

About the Role

As a Network Engineering manager, you will have the opportunity to build a team and lead several essential charters that build a reliable and efficient hybrid-cloud network infrastructure and software network platform for all of Uber.

The focus areas includes

• The design, build, and operation of Uber's global production network infrastructure responsible for billions of transactions every year.
• The reliability and risk automatic capacity management of Uber's global, production network infrastructure.
• The systems and tools that ensure Uber's global and heterogeneous network infrastructure with the highest reliability, safety, and performance to serve one of the biggest online real-time processing platforms as Uber.

It is an opportunity to join several greenfield projects to drive the platform architecture from the ground up and bring a significant impact, both technically and commercially.

What you will do

• Lead an innovation and engineering-oriented organization that builds networks from scratch. To be successful you will need to create and strengthen a diverse and inclusive culture for your teams.
• Drive longer term technical strategy across various backbones, cloud networking, and the critical observability, alerting, capacity planning and sequencing required to support these systems.
• Communicate and collaborate with teams within and outside Uber. Understand and distill your stakeholders needs while guiding your various teams to prioritize and deliver the features and performance required.
• Ensure the processes and tooling for operational excellent and network security is present throughout the design and implementation of the networks.

Basic Qualifications

• 10+ years of progressive leadership experience directing and collaborating on high visibility initiatives across geo-distributed team environments.
• 4+ years of proven experience leading multi-disciplinary teams and various focuses, including Engineering Managers and Technical Leads.
• Experience in team building, organization design, project management, and delivery.
• Experience having designed and operated large-scale distributed networks with fault tolerance, scalability, and performance optimizations. You have a broad and varied understanding of network protocols, network design, and network operations and how to effectively apply the principles to create and operate production/revenue-generating environments to ensure technical advantages for the business.

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong emphasis on ownership & empowerment of your teams with a proven track record of team development and individual mentorship

• Acts as escalation point during incidents and a diffuser of pressure, while also able to balance a high level decision-maker for prioritization and trade-offs

• Comfortable working with ambiguity in a constantly evolving environment and helping bring clarity and structure for your teams.

• A bonus if you are a domain expert in the field of public cloud, on-prem data centers, or IT systems.
