About the Role
As a Manager I of Software Engineering at Uber Freight, you will lead and mentor a team of engineers building scalable microservices that power our logistics platform. Your team’s work will directly impact how independent drivers, shippers, and operations teams move freight across the world. You will collaborate closely with Product Managers, Designers, and Operations to deliver solutions, drive engineering excellence, and help define the technical roadmap to support future scale. This is a great opportunity for a hands-on technical leader looking to take the next step into people management while remaining actively involved in design and execution.
What the Candidate Will Do

Lead design and development efforts across multiple teams with a focus on both short- and long-term scalability.

Partner with Product, Operations, and Engineering stakeholders to define technical requirements and translate them into executable solutions.

Build new technical foundations and help shape the roadmap for product features that support our customers and operations at scale.

Define and uphold standards around testing, monitoring, and alerting to ensure system reliability and maintainability.

Identify and advocate for reusable, extensible architecture that reduces redundancy and increases velocity across teams.

Serve as a connector between your team and broader engineering initiatives, ensuring alignment with company-wide priorities.

Drive project execution by allocating resources, removing blockers, and enabling rapid iteration.

Foster a high-performing team culture rooted in collaboration, ownership, and continuous improvement.

Support the career development and growth of your direct reports through mentorship, feedback, and performance management.
Basic Qualifications
-
2+ years of experience managing or leading software engineering teams.
-
8+ years of software engineering experience, including experience leading engineering projects.
-
Demonstrated hands-on development experience with scalable backend systems or full-stack applications.

Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to guide teams through complex technical challenges.
Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Experience with backend technologies such as Go, Java, Python, or equivalent.

Experience leading or mentoring engineers in a team setting.
-
Exposure to performance management, hiring, and career development practices.

Familiarity with distributed systems and microservice architecture.

Experience working in logistics, transportation, or supply chain industries is a plus.
