
Director, MBS Trading - Global Fixed Income
Nuveen's Global Fixed Income Group is hiring a Senior Trader to support its Mortgage-Backed Securities (MBS) trading function. This role sits within the Fixed Income Trading team, which is responsible for trade execution and trade support across Nuveen's fixed income portfolio mandates, collectively representing over $500 billion in fixed income assets under management.
The Senior Trader will work closely with MBS portfolio managers and senior research analysts to execute trades and provide operational support across a range of portfolio mandates, including the TIAA General Account, mutual funds, insurance portfolios, and separately managed accounts. Nuveen's Public Fixed Income team manages approximately $60 billion in Structured Product assets, of which $25 billion is allocated to MBS sectors.
The ideal candidate will bring demonstrated experience in fixed income trading, with specific knowledge of MBS and Structured Products markets. The ability to manage multiple priorities across diverse portfolio mandates is essential to success in this role.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Primarily focus on the MBS sector, in both Agency & Non-Agency MBS, but work across other structured sectors as needed, communicating with multiple portfolio managers, research analysts & traders.
- Execute investment ideas effectively, as authorized by portfolio managers, in the Primary and Secondary markets, across all MBS sectors (Agency & Non-Agency MBS) as well as other structured products sectors.
- Understand Nuveen’s investment goals, divergent portfolio mandates, and present relative value ideas to portfolio managers.
- Perform at a high level and be an integral part of the investment team.
- Contribute market color and spread data to investment discussions. Understand how flows in one asset class may impact spreads in related asset classes.
- Track spreads and other market data for portfolio managers and research analysts. Point out relationships across markets and potential trades that arise from those relationships.
- Interact internally with portfolio managers and research team to vet offerings and suggest trade ideas based on a deep understanding of mandate suitability.
- Build upon relationships with existing Wall Street sales /trading/syndicate desks.
- Interact with various business partners internally, including Middle Office, Valuations, Derivative Services, Risk/Compliance, and Technology.
- Communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing) key themes in the marketplace, price action, liquidity conditions, and technical direction of the market to Structured Products team and senior management across Global Fixed Income.
- Attend industry conferences and events to enhance skills and build/further develop an industry network and represent the institution & team on panels, industry conferences or with clients

Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of 2+ years of MBS structure product trading experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- 4 - 7 years of structured product trading experience preferably within MBS asset class
- Master’s degree or CFA
- Ability to assess facts and make quick decisions in a trading environment.
- Proficient in basic investment/trading platforms: Bloomberg, Charles River & Trade Web and the ability to quickly learn any required internal applications
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to manage both internal and external business relationships
- Strong attention to detail and high operational accuracy
- Ability to manage multiple tasks on the trading desk

Base Pay Range: $113,000/yr - $160,000/yr
Actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, time in role, base salary of internal peers, prior performance, business sector, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, the competitive compensation package may include, depending on the role, participation in an incentive program linked to performance (for example, annual discretionary incentive programs, non-annual sales incentive plans, or other non-annual incentive plans).

Options for rolling over a TIAA Traditional Annuity account
I worked for a Massachusetts-based university for a brief period of time in 2003-2004. The university’s retirement contributions were put into a TIAA CREF account and invested in TIAA’s Traditional Annuity. It’s a small amount of money (now about $14,500) relative to my whole portfolio, but it annoys me that it’s in an annuity account, and that it’s with TIAA when the rest of my investments are elsewhere.
