About the Role
As a Data Scientist II, you'll partner with product and operations leaders to shape the strategy for Thumbtack's Partnerships and Commercial Programs teams. You'll work directly with our Business Development team to enable the success of strategic partnerships through data and insights. This includes measuring and optimizing integrations with third-party platforms- from demand-side API and MCP integrations that help homeowners find service professionals, to supply-side FSM integrations that help service professionals find customers and manage their leads. You will also work flexibly across other Commercial Programs, such as Refund Operations or Category Management, depending on business priorities.
A key part of this role is bringing AI capabilities to the team. You'll not only build AI-powered data products and tools, but also use AI to streamline workflows, accelerate analysis, and uplevel the team's capabilities. We're looking for someone who is excited to experiment with tools like Claude Code and similar technologies to transform how we work.
You will measure and test the impact of new partnerships and ventures and proactively strategize on where the team should focus. You will be involved in building many new processes from 0 to 1. Data Scientists also collaborate with partners in Data Engineering, Marketing, Engineering, Finance, Internal Tools and Product teams on broader efforts.
You will be expected to quickly build technical and content expertise about our platform and partnerships ecosystem. You will be involved in scoping, prioritization and execution of tasks related to new company initiatives and programs while also gathering, organizing and presenting insights, trends and predictions to partners and stakeholders.
What you'll do
- Partner with leaders of Thumbtack's Partnerships and Commercial Programs teams to conduct in-depth quantitative analyses that guide strategic decisions
- Measure partnership performance and health, building metrics and dashboards that track the success of integrations with third-party platforms
- Design and implement A/B tests, market-based tests, and other experiments
- Build and deploy AI-powered data products, tools, and workflows that enable faster, better decision-making
- Champion AI adoption within the team—experimenting with different tools to streamline analyses, automate reporting, and uplevel team capabilities
- Make recommendations based on detailed analysis and a deep understanding of our business and partnership ecosystem
- Build and maintain reports, models, metrics, SQL queries, and dashboards (Looker/Tableau) which provide insight into business performance and outcomes
- Identify key drivers of core business outcomes through regression analyses and other statistical techniques
- Contribute to our team and company data culture through peer collaboration, training, coaching and sharing of AI best practices
In order to be successful, you must bring
- BA/BS degree, preferably in Economics, Statistics, Math, or Computer Science
- 3+ years in analytics, data science, or economics
- Strong AI curiosity and hands-on experience using AI tools in data science workflows (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar)
- Flexibility and comfort working across diverse problem types—from partnership measurement to refund operations optimization
- Strong written and verbal communication skills: this role will require writing content and explaining results to internal and external audiences
- Strong experience using SQL to query large datasets, proficiency with data visualization software (e.g., Tableau, Looker), and familiarity with statistics/programming languages (e.g., R, Python)
- Ability to detect and debug data anomalies in complex operational processes and a track record of working with business leaders to drive improvements and efficiencies
- Demonstrated ability to self-motivate and drive projects independently as well as partner successfully with cross-functional teams
Expected salary ranges
- For candidates living in Ontario and British Columbia, the expected salary range for the role is currently $131,800 - $170,500.

The Data Science team empowers Thumbtack to use data to guide business decisions. We collaborate with partners across the company to solve the most analytically challenging problems -- everything from how we set prices across hundreds of local services categories to evaluating the impact of a new business model on company performance. This role specifically sits on the Operations Data Science team, which provides insights for Thumbtack's Partnerships, Business Development, Commercial Programs, Sales, Support Operations, and Trust and Safety teams. We are a tight-knit, intellectually curious team that is committed to improving Thumbtack and improving each other.
