Job Description
As part of the Thermo Fisher Scientific team, you’ll discover meaningful work that makes a positive impact on a global scale. Join our colleagues in bringing our Mission to life every single day to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer. We provide our global teams with the resources needed to achieve individual career goals while helping to take science a step a step beyond by developing solutions for some of the world’s toughest challenges, like protecting the environment, making sure our food is safe or helping find cures for cancer.
Location/Division-Specific Information:
Hillsboro, OR. Relocation assistance is NOT provided.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check, which includes a drug screen.
Discover Impactful Work:
Our factory produces low-volume, high-complexity electron microscopy products for semiconductor designers and manufacturers to use in the creation and improvement of their products and manufacturing processes. The team is responsible for the smooth introduction of new electron microscopy products into the factory and field, as well as for ongoing improvements to products and the processes used to manufacture and service them.
You will play a critical, hands-on role supporting advanced electron microscopy systems used in semiconductor manufacturing. Acting as the bridge between R&D, manufacturing, and field service, you will ensure electrical systems perform reliably in real-world production environments.
This is not a pure design role—you will spend significant time on the manufacturing floor and in cleanroom environments, working directly with technicians to troubleshoot issues, improve system performance, and support new product introduction.
You will take ownership of one or more tools, becoming the go-to expert for electrical system performance, reliability, and continuous improvement.
A Day in the Life:
- Work on New Product Introduction (NPI) projects from initiation through release, following the Product Management Process (PMP).
- Troubleshoot complex electrical issues at system and component levels (e.g., power supplies, boards, connectors). Use lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and other diagnostic tools to identify and resolve electrical issues.
- Perform failure analysis and drive root cause resolution for electrical and system-level problems.
- Identify and resolve electrical integration issues during early builds.
- Assist logistics and document management with Technical Product Documentation (TPD) and specification support.
- Using available data, identify areas requiring sustaining projects for design and process improvements.
- Complete component obsolescence projects on current and near-end-of-life products and qualify replacements.
- Develop and optimize build, test, and validation processes for complex electro-mechanical systems, with a focus on electrical performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
- May design tooling required for manufacturing and service to meet cycle time and tool availability requirements.
- You will be the engineering point of contact for one or more tools during integration on the manufacturing floor and be the go-to expert for electrical system performance, reliability, and continuous improvement.
- Build and deliver initial training to Manufacturing, Technical Support, and Service personnel in new product build, test, install, and repair procedures.
- Support critical issues on the production floor to ensure on-time shipments. Drive follow-up actions to ensure issues are resolved.
- Respond to and support safety issues reported on the manufacturing floor and/or field service.
- Support our Global Technical Support team.
- Regularly work on the manufacturing floor and in cleanroom environments alongside technicians to diagnose and resolve system issues
Keys to Success:
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, or related fields (e.g., Systems) required.
Experience
- 3+ years’ experience as an Electrical Engineer, Hardware Engineer, Systems Engineer, or Manufacturing/NPI Engineer with strong electrical systems experience or a similar field is required.
- Experience in crafting technical documentation, procedures, and engineering reports.
- Experience in the analysis of data and basic experimental methods, test protocols, and procedures.
- Proven experience participating in and leading technical projects and managing multi-functional projects.
- Experience developing and deploying new products into a manufacturing environment.
- Experience with Practical Process Improvements (PPI), including cost reduction by workflow or design improvements.
- Experience in reviewing data and driving improvements that affect quality.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Strong practical troubleshooting mindset with the ability to diagnose and resolve real-world system issues with incomplete information.
- Planning, organizing, prioritizing, and goal setting.
- Detailed problem-solving using structured troubleshooting techniques.
- Failure Analysis.
- Collaboration and teamwork in cross-functional teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Motivated individual to work independently on projects and tasks with minimal direction.
- Ability to work on highly sophisticated electro-mechanical equipment.
Benefits:
We offer competitive remuneration, annual incentive plan bonus, healthcare, and a range of employee benefits. Thermo Fisher Scientific offers employment with an innovative, forward-thinking organization, and outstanding career and development prospects. We offer an exciting company culture that stands for integrity, intensity, involvement, and innovation!
