About the role
What to Expect
The Materials QA Inspector supports the Materials Management team by ensuring materials and
prefabricated equipment meet design, purchase orders, codes, regulations, and Tesla standards.
This role focuses on receiving inspection, certification and turnover documentation validation,
cleanliness verification (e.g., pump/equipment), preservation oversight, controlled issue to
execution teams, and maintenance of a materials certification database.
What You’ll Do
- Perform receiving inspections of piping materials and prefabricated equipment (pipe, fittings, valves, tanks, pressure vessels, skids, pumps, and related items) against POs, packing lists, drawings, specs, and approved submittals; verify quantity, marking, condition, identification, and shipping damage upon receipt
- Review and validate MTRs, certificates, heat traceability, PMI results, valve certs, and supplier QC records for accuracy and completeness before acceptance into inventory
- Validate turnover documentation packages upon receipt (as-builts, data books, NDE/test records, MDR/nameplate data, O&M manuals); identify missing, incomplete, or nonconforming documents and hold release until resolved
- Verify internal cleanliness and preservation (scoping, nozzles/open ends, shipping blanks, desiccants, FOD/moisture); confirm that cleanliness acceptance criteria are met; document findings with photos and inspection records
- Assist material management team with issuance of materials and equipment to execution teams, ensuring correct identification, certifications, and turnover documentation accompany each release; maintain issue traceability logs
- Oversee storage and preservation (segregation, end caps/nozzle covers, desiccants, coating protection, contamination control) and manage hold/quarantine/release of nonconforming items
- Maintain the materials certification and equipment documentation database; support nonconformance audits and continuous improvement initiatives with clear records and recommended corrective actions
What You’ll Bring
- Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification or equivalent materials/mechanical QA certification
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience as a quality inspector on large-scale industrial projects,including 3+ years in materials receipt, material control, equipment receipt, or owner/client QA
- Ability to interpret POs, MTRs, piping/equipment specs, ASME/API data, and turnover packages; strong communication with warehouse, procurement, vendors, and field teams
- Working knowledge of quality assurance program requirements and key construction codes (e.g., ASME, ASTM, API); proficiency with inspection tools and methods (e.g., digital calipers, micrometers, PMI familiarity, cleanliness inspection methods, tag/nameplate verification); familiarity with NDE documentation (RT, UT, MT, PT)
- Demonstrates advanced problem-solving skills and the ability to investigate, analyze, and help resolve complex quality issues and report QA findings with recommended corrective actions for nonconformances
- Possesses a comprehensive understanding of quality management principles and the ability to apply them throughout all phases of the project
- Ability to perform effectively within a high-performance, cross-functional organization with extremely tight timelines and project/turnover goals
