What to Expect

We’re building the charger that shows up on millions of walls and powers tens of millions of cars. Wall Connector is also a cornerstone of Tesla’s bidirectional vehicle strategy, unlocking energy at terawatt-hour scale for our customers. The Tesla Energy Device Software team is looking for a Software Engineer to build firmware and device software for Wall Connector and Tesla’s broader AC charging product line: install cleanly, charge safely, meter accurately, talk reliably to vehicles and the Tesla ecosystem, stay compliant across global markets, and ship continuous improvements over the air.

Depending on team needs and your background, you may own work across embedded charging features such as metering, communications, safety interlocks and fault handling, and real-time control behavior; device platform & site controls such as embedded Linux services, local coordination (including multi-unit / site-oriented controls such as load and energy sharing concepts around V2X), and integration with third-party systems and partners; and global product readiness such as regional compliance, and certifiable software paths for new markets

These products resemble other IoT systems in many ways: they need to be installed, configured, diagnosed, and kept healthy in the field. Once operational, they run autonomously, respond to commands, and provide useful telemetry with the added bar of EV safety, metrology, and regulatory constraints. Our stack is diverse: bare-metal / RTOS firmware, embedded Linux, local and cloud-facing protocols, and validation tooling. Pragmatism, willingness to dive into new codebases and standards, eagerness to work with stakeholders (hardware, validation, compliance, product, partners), and engineering leadership are key strengths we expect you to bring to the table.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, implement, and debug AC charging device software in C & Rust across real-time embedded and embedded Linux environments
  • Own or contribute to core product areas such as metering, comms stacks, safety-related behaviors, charging state machines, diagnostics, and OTA-safe feature delivery
  • Collaborate with Product, Hardware, Validation, and Compliance to turn requirements (including regional compliance) into clear designs, tests, and shippable firmware
  • Build and maintain software for installation, configuration, commissioning, and field diagnosis; improve reliability and debuggability of devices already in the fleet
  • Contribute to site-oriented controls and third-party integration where needed (e.g. multi-charger coordination, energy/load sharing concepts, partner or external system interfaces adjacent to Wall Connector)
  • Work with other engineering teams on APIs and boundaries between control firmware, platform services, mobile/cloud, and partner systems
  • Contribute to system architecture, automated tests, and engineering practices that raise product reliability, developer productivity, and release confidence
  • Support production and fleet needs: bring-up issues, field anomalies, and continuous improvement after launch

What You’ll Bring

  • Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work in an extremely fast-paced, collaborative environment
  • Experience developing mission-critical embedded or device software and corresponding test suites
  • Proficiency in systems languages used on-device (e.g. C, Rust, Go a plus) and comfort debugging real hardware
  • Real-world experience in one or more of: Real-time / RTOS or bare-metal firmware (peripherals, drivers, safety-minded state machines); Embedded Linux application or middleware development; Device comms (UART, CAN, Ethernet, Wi‑Fi, BLE, or similar); Metering, power/energy measurement, or regulatory-constrained measurement software
  • Strong software fundamentals: clear interfaces, maintainability, failure handling, and testability
  • Experience with unit / integration / HIL-style validation, reading schematics, or lab bring-up is a plus
  • Exposure to EV charging, safety standards, global/market compliance, multi-device site controls, or third-party protocol integration is a plus
