Staff Electrical Engineer
About the role
What to Expect
Designing and building factory infrastructure at record speed is key to enabling Tesla to scale. We are looking for a Staff Electrical Engineer to lead a small electrical design team supporting vehicle and factory programs across our Lathrop and Fremont sites.
As part of the EPC Infrastructure Design Engineering group, you will bring deep electrical engineering expertise and combine it with people leadership, balancing technical judgment with prioritization, resource planning, and cross-functional coordination. You will remain hands-on on complex scopes while coaching a small team through concept design, detailed engineering, permit packages, and construction support. Regular travel between Fremont and Lathrop is required.
What You’ll Do
- Lead a small electrical engineering team through planning, prioritization, people and resource management, and delivery across active factory programs at Fremont and Lathrop
- Own electrical design quality from concept through IFB/IFP/IFC and construction administration, partnering with Engineers of Record as applicable
- Drive electrical scope for power distribution, lighting, grounding, life safety power, and related factory electrical systems
- Lead power systems studies and arc flash analysis, including protective device coordination and arc flash protection labeling
- Establish and maintain peer and interdisciplinary design review practices with CSA, MEP, manufacturing, and construction partners
- Translate stakeholder requirements into constructible deliverables; control scope, technical planning, and change management in a fast-paced environment
- Coordinate with Project Controls, Construction, and AHJs so packages support procurement, permitting, and construction readiness; support RFIs, field coordination, and design guidance at both sites
- Mentor engineers, support career growth, and foster clear ownership and constructive review
- Identify risks and design deficiencies early; escalate tradeoffs and partner on sequencing and solutions
- Continually improve electrical standards, workflows, and handoffs so designs are consistent, safe, and constructible
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience; Professional Engineer (PE) required
- 8+ years of electrical design experience on large commercial, industrial, or manufacturing facilities, including leading or coordinating a small multi-engineer team
- Strong technical depth in factory/building electrical systems (MV/LV distribution, one-lines, panel schedules, lighting, grounding, code compliance)
- Hands-on experience with power systems studies, short-circuit and coordination analysis, arc flash assessment, and arc flash protection labeling
- Experience delivering design packages through construction for complex infrastructure or manufacturing projects, including AHJ coordination and permitting
- Proven collaboration across Architectural, Structural, Mechanical, and Construction stakeholders
- Ability to adapt, multi-task, and prioritize under tight timelines with evolving requirements; hands-on on technical issues while leading delivery
- Excellent written and verbal communication; clear risk and status communication to technical and non-technical audiences
- Willingness to travel regularly between Fremont and Lathrop and work extended hours as project needs require
- Proficiency with MS Office and Bluebeam; familiarity with power system analysis tools (e.g., SKM, ETAP, or Easy Power) and A/E collaboration tools
