What to Expect
The Technical Writer is part of Tesla's Manufacturing Test Engineering team at the forefront of building innovative automation testing equipment. This team challenges the frontiers of traditional manufacturing, creating complex automation equipment to test Tesla vehicle components, energy storage and data center products, and humanoid robotics around the world. The Technical Writer works with a team of talented engineers and assembly technicians to develop Tesla's equipment operational, maintenance, and diagnostic instructions. This role is expected to contribute to the team's mission in a rapid and exponentially growing capacity. This role is based at our Fremont, CA location and will partner with our other build locations in Palo Alto, CA, Reno, NV, and Toronto, Canada with potential future expansions.

What You’ll Do
- Create and update equipment maintenance & operational manuals and manufacturing instructions for use by non-engineers
- Collaborate with various engineering teams (electrical, controls, mechanical, software, manufacturing) to gather technical information about the equipment and prepare robust post-deployment documentation
- Understand technical problems and communicate them effectively to non-technical employees
- Edit content according to Tesla style guidelines and enforce organization standards
- Improve editorial and visual standards for documentation and recommend innovative designs, layouts, and formatting as needed
- Manage tasks and information flow using collaboration software (such as JIRA, Share Point, and custom databases) and use a routing and review process for document approval
- Travel domestically and internationally for equipment construction or FAT/SAT activities (up to 30%) to validate information for accuracy
What You’ll Bring
- 5+ years of working experience in a related field
- Must be organized, detail-oriented, and able to multi-task and evaluate priorities
- Ability to create and technical documentation that is accurate, complete, clear, specific, and concise
- Can extract and comprehend system operation from typical engineering documentation from both a software and hardware perspective (e.g., schematics and subsystem specification documents)
- Ability to explain technical concepts to peers, people from various parts of the organization, and non-technical employees
- Proficiency with collaboration software such as JIRA, Share Point, and custom databases
- Degree in English, Rhetoric and Composition, Technical/Professional Writing, Journalism, Communications, or equivalent experience
