Systems Engineer, Optimus Actuators Test
About the role
What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Engineer to develop functional test equipment (such as dynamometers, electrical testers, and motor calibration equipment) for the Optimus with the Drive Unit Manufacturing team in Austin, TX. You will work closely with Tesla’s internal Product Design, Firmware, Production and Quality Engineering teams and lead cross-functional design activities with automation equipment vendors to develop and deploy new Drive Unit and Actuator test systems. You will assume full ownership of the design, development, and optimization of the equipment and process from low to high volume while providing design for manufacturing feedback to the product design teams.
What You’ll Do
- Develop highly automated manufacturing test systems from concept to production
- Develop and improve machine, process, test, and software specifications for high volume automated manufacturing equipment
- Perform design reviews on low and high voltage electrical, pneumatics, hydraulic, and mechanical systems for complex manufacturing test equipment
- Be a subject matter expert on the product and process to drive development with software development teams and integration of test software applications (written in Golang, C++, python, or Lab View) into manufacturing equipment
- Support equipment troubleshooting and qualification during development and ramp-up of manufacturing equipment
- Analyze data and drive actions to optimize quality, throughput, and availability while reducing cost and lead-time
- Collaborate with cross functional teams to analyze data and drive actions to optimize quality, throughput, and availability while reducing cost and lead-time
What You’ll Bring
- Automated test equipment design and development experience (e.g., calibration, functional test, or dyno equipment)
- Thorough understanding of motors, drives, actuators, and their underlying operating principles
- Hands-on experience with electrical design of equipment including concepting, single-line, and detailed schematics development in Auto
CAD or Eplan:
- Hands-on experience with CAN bus communication systems and trace analysis
- Familiarity with networked communication systems and common fieldbus technologies (e.g., Ethernet, Profinet, Modbus and managed switches)
- Advanced proficiency in PLC programming and troubleshooting (e.g., Siemens)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering, similar degree, or equivalent experience
