About the role
What to Expect
Tesla’s Supplier Industrialization team is responsible for process development and qualification activities at suppliers. This role will lead a team of cell SIE responsible to develop, qualify, scale up and optimize manufacturing and quality system for battery cell manufacturing. In this role, you will work closely with many organizations both internal and external to Tesla, taking new battery cell designs from initial concept through into full production.
The battery cell is a critical component in Tesla vehicles and storage systems. This role will have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to our products. The work environment is demanding, fast-paced and incredibly exciting. The ideal candidate should be ready to push their limits, as they join in highly motivated and capable team to make unbelievable things into reality.
What You’ll Do
- Own the end-to-end battery cell manufacturing process development & design for manufacturability — from upstream electrode mixing to downstream finished-cell testing and shipment — ensuring supplier readiness, process rigor, and mass-production quality at scale
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Supplier Industrialization Engineers (SIEs) responsible for manufacturing readiness, process qualification, and production ramp execution at supplier sites
- Collaborate with supplier and Tesla cell design teams to ensure new cell architectures are viable for mass production
- Partner with suppliers on process development & controls, identifying and eliminating risks before they reach volume production
- Guide suppliers on process DOE, establishing optimal process parameters to meet design & quality standards
- Drive team for structured failure analysis and corrective action processes for inline escapes, OQC findings, cell performance deviations, and IQC failures at Tesla
- Drive cell process change risk evaluation & validation with respect to cell reliability and performance before implementation to production
What You’ll Bring
- Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Material Science Engineering discipline and 5+ years of experience in cell manufacturing (Pouch/Prismatic/Can type cells), or equivalent experience
- Deep hands-on experience in developing cutting edge battery cell manufacturing process – Mixing, Coating, Calendaring, Slitting, Tab Forming, Winding/Stacking, Assembly & Formation
- At least 3 years’ experience in a people management role & proven track record to build and lead a strong team
- Working knowledge of cell design & performance requirements and relationship to cell manufacturing process
- Strong command of quality systems, statistical process control, and root cause analysis (8D, PFMEA fishbone)
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence supplier organizations at a senior level
- Demonstrate take-charge attitude, be able to work independently & set the team’s priorities based on competing and urgent needs
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and concisely to both engineering teams and non-technical stakeholders
