About the role

What to Expect

We are building Terafab, a vertically integrated semiconductor factory at an unprecedented scale. The facility houses logic, memory, packaging, test, and lithography mask production under one roof, optimized for rapid iteration and maximum compute density per square foot.

Tesla is seeking an Environmental Engineer, Air Quality to support the Austin Fab. You will support air permitting and compliance programs, performing complex technical work across permitting strategy, emissions analysis, and sustaining compliance assurance. You will manage external environmental consultants, serve as the internal air quality technical SME, and advise business partners to meet environmental performance and program goals.

What You’ll Do

  • Support air permitting end to end by evaluating manufacturing processes and materials, identify emission sources, calculate potential to emit, assess regulatory applicability, prepare BACT analyses, recommend permitting paths, and manage agency correspondence

  • Review new or modified equipment, facility changes, and programs against regulatory and Tesla requirements; recommend corrective actions to accountable stakeholders

  • Identify and manage air compliance risk by tracking evolving environmental laws and regulations and applying Management of Change (MOC) and related tools on new and existing projects

  • Drive day-to-day air compliance, including recordkeeping, routine evaluations, periodic emissions and compliance reporting, and coordination of source testing with stakeholders

  • Support audits and inquiries from federal, state, and local regulatory agencies

  • Develop, track, and maintain SOPs and work instructions that keep air programs consistent and audit-ready

  • Lead or support incident analysis to identify causal factors and drive effective corrective actions

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent experience

  • 5+ years of experience in New Source Review and Title V air permitting and compliance assurance in Texas and/or semiconductor industry, including managing regulatory inspections and agency interactions

  • Strong working knowledge of air quality laws and frameworks (CAA, NEPA, and applicable state requirements), including federal NESHAP/MACT/NSPS for complex manufacturing and R&D; chemical and/or semiconductor experience preferred

  • Proven ability to translate chemical and physical manufacturing processes into accurate emission inventories, air reports, and permit applications

  • Experience prioritizing work and delivering multi-workstream projects on aggressive timelines in a fast-changing environment

  • Clear, concise communicator who can engage leadership, engineering, Legal, production, and technical specialists

  • Strong analytical judgment with practical problem-solving, decision-making, and multi-priority time management skills
