Manufacturing Engineer, Cell Mixing
About the role
What to Expect
Tesla is looking for a highly motivated manufacturing engineer to identify, develop and scale up manufacturing processes for our cutting-edge Tesla battery cell manufacturing lines. Our small team is multidisciplinary and highly cross-functional, investigating and developing a broad range of manufacturing technologies, while interfacing with several teams and sites across Tesla.
The battery cell is a critical component in Tesla vehicles and storage systems. This role will have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to our products, with the potential for global impact. The work environment is demanding, fast-paced, and incredibly exciting.
What You’ll Do
- Drive development of new/innovative manufacturing processes from proof of concept through to full-scale commercial production that enable improved battery performance, reduce costs, and meet throughput and safety requirements
- Perform technoeconomic feasibly studies for proposed processes
- Execute Do Es to optimize process conditions
- Use inline, online, and offline instruments and material characterization techniques to correlate process parameters, material properties, and downstream cell performance
- Conduct analysis, interpretation, and presentation of experimental data
- Drive process commissioning on new production lines
- Develop and manage PFMEA risk assessments to prioritize process improvement projects and ensure adequate metrology and controls are in place
- Debug process integration issues to ensure interactions between processes are kept under control
- Build process documentation to accurately define the process to cross-functional teams (equipment, quality, production, etc.)
- Model holistic process cost models using bottoms-up system approach
What You’ll Bring
- Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, or equivalent experience
- 2+ years of experience in process development engineering, chemical engineering, or manufacturing engineering
- Experience with industrial mixing, dry powder handling and conveyance, milling, extrusion, granulation, spray coating, spray drying, fluid bed drying or industrial chemical processing
- Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and ability to apply them towards manufacturing process development
Some powder characterization experience, such as PSA, TGA, DSC, XRD, XRF, FTIR and rheology is preferred
