About the role

What to Expect

As an Automation Controls Technician, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the operational availability of a wide array of manufacturing equipment. You will apply your technical skills to install, maintain, and repair mechanical and electrical systems, factory automation, and robotics. You will work alongside controls and equipment engineering teams as well as Quality, Process, EHS, and Production to improve equipment reliability, strengthen safety and quality controls, and minimize or eliminate downtime. Tesla's Controls Technicians are also the first-responding problem solvers who manage machine breakdown recoveries to keep production running.

What You’ll Do

  • Independently troubleshoot and resolve PLC/control system faults, software alarms, SCADA/HMI issues, and production-floor problems (including Ignition monitoring, tool connectivity, and communication protocol diagnostics) to keep fully automated systems running smoothly
  • Diagnose and resolve faults across sensors, instrumentation, vision systems, VFDs, servo drives, and robotic systems
  • Support preventive maintenance, new machine commissioning, and planned downtime windows for software updates and PCA implementations
  • Develop solutions, optimize production processes, and drive improvements through failure analysis in partnership with cross-functional teams while maintaining the highest quality and safety standards
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, controls-related records, and SOPs
  • Train employees to identify and resolve problems independently, always working in full compliance with safety and accident-prevention regulations

What You’ll Bring

  • Completed training or degree in computer science, automation technology, mechatronics, electronics, or a comparable field
  • Relevant professional experience in the maintenance of production machines, ideally within automotive manufacturing
  • Solid technical understanding and hands-on experience with common PLC platforms (Siemens TIA Portal, Allen Bradley Studio 5000), including the ability to interpret electrical schematics and ladder logic
  • Experience with SCADA/HMI systems (e.g. Ignition, WinCC) including monitoring, configuration, and troubleshooting
  • Working knowledge of industrial networking and communication protocols (Profinet, Ether Net/IP, Profibus, OPC-UA, Modbus) and field-device diagnostics (proximity, photoelectric, encoders, pressure/flow sensors)
  • Knowledge of fully automated production systems and demonstrated understanding of industrial safety systems, including safety PLCs, guarding devices, LOTO procedures, and emergency stop circuits
  • Hands-on mentality with a proactive approach to problem-solving and strong communication skills to work effectively across departments
  • Willingness to work shifts; professional-level English communication skills, both written and verbal
