About the role

What to Expect

The Tesla Energy Products team is bringing battery and solar technology to the grid to facilitate a renewable energy ecosystem and redefine the way the world will use energy in the future. As part of the Controls Modeling team, you are the System Controls Engineer that ensures optimal performance of Tesla’s Powerwall, Solar, Charging, V2X and home ecosystem. This role involves collaboration with multiple teams, including engineering, firmware, integration, validation, pilot testing, and field performance. It also requires the ability to apply engineering fundamentals to the design and implementation of system control algorithms that are at the core of Tesla’s success. Our team is small, committed, fast-moving, and we believe a diverse team of motivated individuals can accomplish almost anything. We are problem solvers, team players and game changers. If this sounds like you, Tesla just might be the place to make your mark.

What You’ll Do

  • Model and design system level control algorithms to manage power and energy flow of Tesla’s Powerwall systems
  • Manage algorithms for power converters, loads, vehicle charging, vehicle grid and load interaction (V2X) in compliance with applicable grid standards
  • Develop control-oriented system models and use them to refine control strategies and drive their implementation
  • Write system controls requirements for existing and next generations of residential energy products
  • Prepare technical reports and summaries for stakeholders
  • Work cross-functionally with product, firmware, system integration, design, and reliability teams

What You’ll Bring

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent, or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of experience with control system design
  • Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink, Python, and C (read)
  • Have knowledge in linear systems analysis, estimation algorithm design, and controls theory
  • Demonstrated ability to ground-up design, analyze, and implement control systems in real-world applications
  • Preferred: Experience with optimization and optimal control methods and solvers
  • Preferred: Familiar with compliance and standards for interconnection of distributed energy resources such as IEEE 1547
  • Exceptional analytical problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate cross-functionally and execute on open-ended projects in a fast-paced, resource-constrained environment
