Robotics Manufacturing Engineer, Optimus Repair & Validation
About the role
What to Expect
Tesla is looking for a highly motivated Manufacturing Engineer to launch production for Optimus humanoid robots. You will work on Full Bot Validation Testing and Heavy Repair Line Design leading end-to-end line design, procurement, commissioning, and ramp production and repair lines in Tesla factories. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, you will drive designs for manufacturability and serviceability, shaping the processes and infrastructure that bring the world's most advanced humanoid robot to high-volume production. If you have proven experience launching new products and a track record of driving successful capital projects from concept through production, join Tesla to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of AI robotics.
What You’ll Do
- Work with cross-functional teams throughout the entire product lifecycle - collaborating closely with Design Engineering, NPI, Quality, and Production to take designs from initial concept through prototype development and into full production
- Define and develop line design requirements for both Optimus full bot end-of-line validation testing and the Heavy Repair Line, spanning initial requirements definition through layout, procurement, installation, and commissioning
- Create process sequences, establish critical process parameters, and perform equipment capacity calculations and line balancing to ensure production efficiency
- Draft RFQs, manage vendor down-selection based on technical capability, cost, and schedule, and oversee project timelines through FAT/SAT and hand-off to sustaining across both lines
- Evaluate, down-select, or innovate testing equipment and methodologies to ensure efficient and seamless integration of robot self-testing within a high-volume production line environment
- Determine utilities requirements for both lines, including electrical power, pneumatics, networking, and any specialized infrastructure needed to support automated test and repair equipment
- Partner with Software, Controls, and Quality Engineering teams to integrate automated test routines into the validation line
- Design automated cells for robot-level repairs such as limb swaps and subassembly replacements, as well as fixtures and tooling to support efficient manual diagnosis and refurbishment of Optimus robots
- Design fixtures, tooling, and ergonomic aids to support manual repair operations, ensuring technicians can safely and efficiently diagnose and refurbish Optimus robots
- Provide DFM feedback to Design Engineering to improve testability in future Optimus generations, drive ramp-to-rate across both lines, and hand off processes, documentation, and training materials to sustaining teams
What You’ll Bring
- Degree in Engineering, or equivalent experience
- Proficiency in CAD tools (CATIA and AutoCAD preferred); experience drafting line layouts in AutoCAD required
- Proficiency in mechanical assembly (press fits, fastener selection, harness routing, etc.)
- Proficiency in electrical integration, quality matrix, testing, and troubleshooting
- Basic familiarity with PLC controls and control system architecture; ability to collaborate effectively with controls engineers on line integration and troubleshooting
- Experience with utilities selection (pneumatics, electrical power, networking) as part of line design and installation planning
- Familiarity with torque tools, fixture design, automation equipment, and communication protocols
- Experience transitioning products from prototype to production, including RFQ development, vendor management, FAT/SAT, and ramp-to-rate activities
- First-principles problem-solving mindset with a bias toward action in fast-paced, ambiguous environments and able to work under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines
- Exemplary verbal and written communication skills; well-organized with meticulous attention to detail
