Sr. Manufacturing Systems Engineer
About the role
What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a driven Systems Engineer to own the design, deployment, and continuous improvement of intelligent automation systems across our world-class manufacturing facilities. You will sit at the intersection of software, hardware, and data — architecting full-stack supervisory applications, AGV/AMR platforms, vision-based inspection pipelines, and the containerized server infrastructure that ties it all together. This is a high-impact role in a fast-paced environment where your work directly influences factory uptime, throughput, and quality.
What You’ll Do
-
Architect and develop full-stack HMI / SCADA applications (Ignition preferred) for supervisory control, operator dashboards, fault management, and real-time data visualization across production lines
-
Lead AGV / AMR system integration, commissioning, and lifecycle support — including fleet management software, traffic control logic, and interface with warehouse execution systems (WES/WMS)
-
Design and deploy vision-based inspection and perception pipelines using deep-learning frameworks for defect detection, object classification, and spatial localization in manufacturing environments
-
Build and maintain containerized microservices (Docker, Docker Compose, Kubernetes) to host SCADA servers, REST/gRPC APIs, model inference endpoints, and data pipelines
-
Develop organized, well-documented full-stack web applications (React / JavaScript front end; Go, Java, or Python back end) integrated with Tesla SSO and third-party factory systems
-
Create and maintain SQL databases and reporting infrastructure; write scripting and automation for data ingestion, KPI tracking, and operational analytics
-
Define and enforce software engineering best practices: version control (Git), code reviews, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, logging, and documentation standards
-
Lead system design reviews and serve as the technical liaison between production, maintenance, IT, and external vendors/suppliers
-
Establish test plans, risk assessments, and validation protocols prior to deployment; drive continuous process improvement by analyzing system metrics and implementing corrective actions to maximize cycle time and uptime
-
Develop training programs and technical documentation for operators and maintenance staff; serve as on-call point of contact for critical system issues, including occasional weekend support
What You’ll Bring
-
Degree in Mechatronics, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience
-
3+ years of professional experience in automation, systems, or controls/equipment engineering on electromechanical systems
-
Proven experience building and deploying Ignition Perspective module SCADA / HMI applications, including API and database integration, historical data, alarming, and user-role management
-
Hands-on experience with AGV / AMR commissioning and fleet management, exposure to MQTT, OPC-UA, or other industrial communication protocols
-
Demonstrated ability to train and deploy computer vision models for industrial inspection, object detection, or spatial reasoning tasks
-
Familiarity with ASRS (Automated Storage & Retrieval Systems) and conveyor control architectures
-
Experience with Linux server administration , shell scripting, system services, log management, and performance tuning
-
Rigorous software development practices: Git, pull-request workflows, CI/CD (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or equivalent), monitoring, and observability
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to present complex technical programs clearly to diverse audiences including leadership, operations, and vendors
-
Experience with vision system hardware (Keyence, Cognex, Sick, or similar) and integration of camera feeds into software pipelines — a strong plus
