About the role
What to Expect
As a Senor Test Engineer focusing on manufacturing reliability of the Tesla Megapack, you will play a key role in ensuring the reliability designed into Tesla’s industrial energy products is maintained throughout product manufacturing. This role follows the reliability lifecycle of the product from concept to design, development, testing/analysis, manufacturing, and field operation to design in, confirm, and grow exceptional reliability at every stage. You will drive reliability testing operations, collaborate with test technicians, mentor entry-level engineers/interns, initiate process improvement efforts and create detailed documentation/reports.
What You’ll Do
- Lead on-site reliability test operations for Tesla’s industrial energy products, including test setup design/build, test plan execution, and data analysis
- Determine component/system-level test solutions that optimize product reliability and durability, FMEA-based risk mitigations, test team resources, and program schedules
- Work closely with Reliability, Design, and Manufacturing teams to validate manufacturing reliability results and action plans, suggesting design and/or process improvements to address reliability and durability issues based on an understanding of failure root causes
- Drive reliability assessments in program reviews and clearly communicate risks in the product lifecycle
- Influence supplier selection for higher reliability and provide clear guidance on reliability requirements and demonstration to suppliers
- Provide reliability design guidelines and apply reliability lessons learned to enable continuous improvement
- Answer complex questions on global product manufacturing reliability performance across Energy Products
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, and one or more years of industry experience in a reliability engineering role,
or equivalent experience - Solid mechanical or electrical engineering fundamentals
- 3–5 years of hands-on experience in hardware design, design validation, hardware testing, mechanical system reliability testing, and durability testing
- Understanding of accelerated testing methods, governing equations, and physics of failure for different failure mechanisms
- Working knowledge of failure analysis techniques such as optical microscopy, SEM, CSAM, X-ray, cross-sectioning, and EDX
- Knowledge of programming in scripting languages for test automation and data analysis/post-processing
- Knowledge of manufacturing engineering fundamentals
- Knowledge of reliability warranty analysis and reliability prediction methods
- Experience working with complex electronic and mechanical systems
- Demonstrated proficiency with hand tools and shop equipment; previous machine shop or automotive maintenance experience is a plus
