Innovation & Design Engineer
About the role
What to Expect
The Innovation & Design Engineer in Service Supply Chain org will be responsible for leading the end-to-end design and development of best-in-class service distribution centers across Tesla's East and West Coast network. This role will drive densification and optimization initiatives across the existing DC network while pioneering next-generation DC concepts to support Tesla's expanding product portfolio — including Cybercab, Semi, and Optimus. The ideal candidate brings a strong warehouse design foundation combined with industrial engineering expertise and a proven track record of taking large-scale distribution centers from concept through firm engineering and into full launch.
What You’ll Do
-
Pioneer next-generation DC design concepts to support Tesla's next phase of growth, including Cybercab, Semi, and Optimus product lines
-
Lead end-to-end design of new service distribution centers from concept development, capacity planning, through detailed engineering and operational launch
-
Own densification and optimization projects across the existing DC network, improving space utilization, throughput, and overall operational efficiency
-
Develop, manage, maintain and report facility design documentation and handbooks, including floor layout control, flow path diagrams, material handling specifications, design templates and best practices
-
Create 2D and 3D visualization demonstrating cube space in warehouse, create unique trackable KPIs based on team requirements
-
Partner with real estate, construction, and architecture teams through site selection, entitlement, and permitting phases
-
Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, supply chain planning, and engineering teams to translate business requirements into scalable facility design solutions
-
Evaluate and integrate advanced automation technologies including AS/RS, goods-to-person (GTP), and conveyor systems into DC design in greenfield & brownfield environment
-
Apply data-driven design principles — leveraging operational data, slotting strategies, and flow modeling to validate and optimize layout decisions. Lead and coordinate external partners including general contractors, consultants, and equipment vendors through design and construction phases
-
Conduct benchmarking and competitive analysis to ensure Tesla's DC network remains best-in-class. Identify design inefficiencies using root cause analysis and first principles thinking, and implement effective solutions across the network
What You’ll Bring
-
3–5 years of experience designing and launching large-scale distribution centers, from concept develop, through firm engineering to live operations
-
Strong warehouse design background with demonstrated industrial engineering fundamentals
-
Proficiency in 2D and 3D facility design and layout tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, or equivalent BIM platforms
-
Experience with material handling systems and automation technologies (AS/RS, GTP, conveyor systems, AMRs)
-
Proven ability to manage cross-functional projects across design, construction, and operations teams
-
Familiarity with slotting strategies, space utilization modeling, and flow path optimization
-
Familiarity with WMS system in distribution center environment and able to capture operation details and data through system database by SQL
-
Experience working with GCs, architects, and real estate teams through the full project lifecycle
-
Strong analytical skills with ability to use operational and planning data to drive design decisions. Knowledge of lean/six sigma methodologies applied to facility design and layout optimization
-
Experience in automotive, aftermarket parts, or high-SKU, high-velocity distribution environments preferred. Innovative and open mind-set to new solutions, technologies, strong in critical thinking, problem solving, and able to navigate through fast-paced environment
