The pay range is $135,000.00 - $243,000.00

Pay is based on several factors which vary based on position. These include labor markets and in some instances may include education, work experience and certifications. About the role:

As a Director, Learning & Development Design, you will lead the strategy, vision, and execution of modern learning design across the enterprise. This role sits at the intersection of instructional design, learning experience innovation, and emerging technology, shaping how Target builds critical skills and capabilities at scale.

You will lead a team of designers and partner closely with business leaders, HR, and learning teams to translate enterprise priorities into innovative, high-impact learning solutions. This includes integrating AI-enabled learning experiences, advancing design standards, and building scalable, engaging solutions that drive measurable business outcomes.

This role requires deep expertise in instructional design, learning technologies, and human-centered design, along with a strong point of view on how Generative AI and digital tools can transform how learning is created and experienced.

Additionally, you will:

Set direction for learning design

  • Define and drive the enterprise learning design strategy

  • Build scalable, modern learning experiences across digital, in-person, and on-demand formats

  • Establish design standards and ensure consistent, high-quality solutions

Lead innovation, including AI

  • Integrate Generative AI into how learning is designed and delivered

  • Expand use of authoring tools and learning technologies

  • Stay current on trends and evolve Target’s learning approach

Deliver high-impact learning solutions

  • Oversee design and development of enterprise programs and curricula

  • Ensure solutions are grounded in strong instructional design and adult learning principles

  • Use data and feedback to continuously improve effectiveness

Partner across the enterprise

  • Work with HR, business leaders, and subject matter experts to align learning to business needs

  • Act as a strategic advisor on learning, design, and capability building

  • Lead and develop a team

  • Build and lead a high-performing team of learning designers

  • Coach and grow team capability in design, technology, and AI

  • Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement

Manage execution

  • Oversee multiple initiatives and ensure delivery on time and within scope

  • Manage vendor partners to scale design and development

  • Navigate complexity and remove barriers to progress

About you:

  • Four-year degree in HR, Organizational Development, or equivalent work experience

  • 8+ years of experience in learning and development, instructional design, or a related field

  • Experience managing and working with vendors in learning and design

  • Deep expertise in instructional design and modern learning approaches

  • Experience leading teams and large-scale, enterprise initiatives

  • Strong skills with authoring tools and learning technologies

  • Experience applying AI to improve learning design and delivery

  • Strong consulting, communication, and stakeholder management skills

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, matrixed environment

  • Experience using data to measure impact and improve outcomes

This position will operate as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Target’s needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member’s core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day.
