Job Description: Project Services Digitalization and AI Intern

Duty station: Bintulu, Sarawak

Function: Project Services & Portfolio (BOM)

Purpose:

The Project Services Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence Intern contributes to the Project organization’s digital transformation agenda and the adoption of AI-enabled ways of working. The role is accountable for supporting the development of analytics and automation solutions (including dashboards, data pipelines, and generative AI prototypes) to enhance visibility across planning, contracting, logistics, and work pack development, while upholding HSSE expectations, ethical standards, and data governance requirements.

Objective:

Provide structured, hands-on exposure to the SMDS Project Realization Process (cost, schedule, management of change, and governance), and develop practical analytics capability through a small-scale dashboard and/or AI deliverable that strengthens Project Services reporting and decision-making.

Accountabilities:

1.

Cost & Schedule Integration Support:

• Assist Cost Engineers and Schedulers in cost and schedule integration activities, including data consolidation from multiple sources (cost reports, schedules, progress updates).
• Support basic cost and schedule analysis (e.g. planned vs actual, milestone status, trend observation).
• Assist in progress tracking to support project performance reporting and portfolio visibility.

Project Controls & Governance Monitoring:

• Support the monitoring of Management of Change (MOC) status, including tracking approvals, ageing, and closure status.
• Follow up on overdue MOCs and actions, and prepare summary status updates for Project Services reporting.
• Assist in maintaining trackers for key project actions, risks, and milestones, ensuring data accuracy and timeliness.

3. Dashboard and Digital Enablement (Power BI / AI Deliverable)

• Develop and maintain Power BI dashboards (or equivalent digital tools) to visualize:
• MOC status and ageing
• Action and milestone tracking
• Selected cost and schedule performance indicators
• Work with Project Services team to define user requirements, data fields, and key insights needed for decision support.
• Assess feasible AI-enabled enhancements, including trend detection, basic predictive insights, and automation of status summaries.
• Deliver a small-scale project that includes:
• Defined problem statement
• Dashboard/AI solution
• Key insights and recommendations for improvement

4. PTA27 Work Pack & Project Readiness Support

• Support preparation of PTA27 Work Packs, including document compilation, completeness checks, and status tracking.
• Assist in coordinating inputs from relevant stakeholders (engineering, cost, schedule, project teams).
• Gain exposure to portfolio screening and project readiness requirements in SMDS.

General Project Services Support & Learning:

• Provide general project services support to ensure timely reporting, data integrity, and compliance with SMDS project processes.
• Assist in preparation of materials for project reviews, forums, and governance checkpoints.
• Learn SMDS project delivery framework, governance expectations, and best practices in project controls.

Requirements:

• Pursuing Diploma/Bachelor’s/Master’s in Engineering, Analytics, Data Science, or related fields.
• Strong Excel skills; familiarity with Power BI; basic Python/SQL skills are an advantage.
• Demonstrated interest in artificial intelligence and machine learning concepts, large language model prompting, and/or workflow automation (Microsoft Power Automate and Power Apps).
• Strong communication, analytical thinking, and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple parallel tasks with clear documentation.

By the end of the internship, the intern will be able to:

• Demonstrate an understanding of how projects are planned, monitored, and governed within SMDS.
• Explain the interdependencies between cost, schedule, management of change, and overall project performance.
• Demonstrate practical capability in Power BI and foundational AI applications for project analytics.
• Deliver a functioning dashboard and/or analytical deliverable that provides measurable value to Project Services reporting.
