About the role

Position Summary

Samsung, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, is founded on a simple philosophy – the endless pursuit of excellence will create a better world for all. At Samsung Austin Research and Development Center (SARC) and Advanced Computing Lab (ACL), we are building a center of excellence for Intellectual Property (IP) that is applied to high-performance computing devices (mobile, automotive, and other custom market segments) consumed by millions of people around the world. Come build with us!

Role and Responsibilities

As a Senior Staff Storage Engineer, you will serve as the deepest technical authority for the storage infrastructure powering our Electronic Design Automation (EDA) and High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments. Your work will directly influence engineering productivity, regression efficiency, and time-to-results across large-scale GPU and system-level IP development programs.

In this high-impact individual contributor role, you will own the architecture, scalability, and performance strategy for Net App ONTAP and Linux-based storage infrastructure, supporting thousands of compute clients and petabyte-scale environments. You will partner closely with CAD, silicon design, infrastructure, and SRE teams to drive storage architecture decisions, improve operational efficiency, and deliver scalable, resilient infrastructure for critical engineering workloads.

  • Lead the multi-year architecture, scalability, and capacity roadmap for Net App ONTAP, StorageGRID, and enterprise storage infrastructure supporting EDA and HPC workloads.
  • Drive technical direction across petabyte-scale NFS environments, including performance optimization, resilience, cost efficiency, Linux filesystem tuning, and hybrid-cloud storage capabilities using AWS FSx for Net App ONTAP, Azure Net App Files, and Fabric Pool-integrated object storage solutions.
  • Architect, deploy, and support enterprise-scale storage platforms and replication topologies, including ONTAP clusters (FAS, AFF, ASA), Flex Group, Snap Mirror, Fabric Pool, StorageGRID, and multi-site replication environments.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex end-to-end performance and operational issues spanning EDA applications, Linux NFS clients, networking, ONTAP internals, monitoring frameworks, and distributed compute environments while advancing automation using Python, Ansible, Terraform, and ONTAP REST APIs.
  • Provide technical leadership across the organization by mentoring engineers, leading design and architecture reviews, driving root-cause analysis for critical incidents, and influencing infrastructure strategy across CAD, infrastructure, SRE, and silicon engineering teams.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 11+ years of experience with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field, or 9+ years with a Master’s Degree, or 7+ years with a Ph.D.
  • 11+ years of enterprise storage engineering experience, including 5+ years directly supporting large-scale EDA and HPC environments
  • Expert-level experience with Net App ONTAP, including Flex Group, Snap Mirror, Fabric Pool, QoS, performance analysis, and ONTAP REST API automation.
  • Deep expertise in Linux filesystems and NFS environments, including XFS, ZFS, ext4, NFSv3/NFSv4 tuning, and Linux performance troubleshooting using kernel traces, nfsiostat, and System Tap / eBPF / perf output
  • Strong understanding of EDA and HPC workload characteristics, including RTL simulation, formal verification, physical design, and DFT environments
  • Strong automation and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) experience using Python, Ansible, Terraform, and API-driven tooling
  • Demonstrated experience defining storage architecture, scalability, and operational strategy for large-scale enterprise environments supporting petabytes, thousands of clients, 24x7 operations
  • Strong experience with NFS-on-Linux environments, identity integration (LDAP, Active Directory, automount), and complex enterprise storage escalations
  • Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills with a data-driven approach
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to engage senior leadership and guide teams through ambiguity in a fast-paced, global environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • In-depth expertise in StorageGRID
  • Experience with parallel filesystems such as Lustre, GPFS / IBM Spectrum Scale, or BeeGFS
  • Experience with hybrid-cloud storage environments, including AWS FSx for Net App ONTAP, Azure Net App Files, and S3 tiering via Fabric Pool
  • Familiarity with enterprise backup and recovery platforms such as Comm Vault, Net Backup, or Networker
  • Experience with VMware storage integration and virtualization environments
  • Familiarity with EDA workload managers such as LSF, Slurm, or Grid Engine
  • Experience contributing to open-source storage or filesystem tooling
  • Net App Certified Data Administrator (NCDA), RHCE, VCP, or related advanced Net App certification
