About the Role

Pratt & Whitney Materials and Processes Engineering (MPE) organization in East Hartford, CT has an opening for a M5 manager position to lead a group of individuals in the Alloy Development group. The candidate will lead a highly focused team in a high tech, fast moving and challenging environment. The team works at the interface of physical research and technical development of the technologies applied in aerospace jet engines. This is a technical supervisor position where the selected candidate will supervise a group of 12-15 Engineers and Technicians.

Note: Only candidates Internal to Engineering will be considered for this role.

What You Will Do

  • Manage and lead a team of skilled engineers and technicians focused on Ni and ferrous alloy development to support both next generation engine designs and sustainment of the existing fleet.
  • Establish project prioritization, allocate resources appropriately and hold team members accountable for achieving committed objectives on schedule.
  • Monitor and review technical work for completeness and technical accuracy.
  • Provide technical mentorship and coaching to direct reports on management and communication of risk and the execution of risk-based decision making.
  • Evaluate team performance and develop strategic plan to execute to attract new talent to continue knowledge transition to the next generation of alloys engineers.
  • Attract, hire, develop, and retain talent by coaching, encouraging, challenging, and ensuring that the talent is being developed for next generation of subject matter experts.
  • Build effective relationships by collaborating with both internal and external customers and peers.
  • Responsible for driving process improvements to solve problems or enhance the efficiency of the work area.
  • Support the strategic vision for Discipline capabilities including identifying long-term strategic technology investments, roadmaps and help securing internal & external funding.
  • Provide field & production support to meet business needs and customer requirements. Responsibilities would include root cause analysis, brainstorming solutions, implementing corrective actions, and ensuring elimination of the root cause.

Required Qualifications

  • BS degree in technical or engineering discipline, preferably metallurgy, materials science, chemical engineering or mechanical engineering and minimum 10 years of relevant experience.
  • OR Advanced degree in technical or engineering discipline, preferably metallurgy, materials science, chemical engineering or mechanical engineering and minimum 7 years of work experience.
  • Ability to build positive relationships within and across teams.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant experience with processing, characterization, and mechanical properties of nickel-based and ferrous alloys including cast + wrought, powder metallurgy, and/or single crystal manufacturing processes.
  • Demonstrated skill as a team leader or manager in aerospace or defense industry.
  • Experience in new material introductions and/or Technology maturation processes (For example TRL/MRL).
  • Experience in establishing and managing collaborative projects, developing strategic partnerships within industry and/or academic institutions.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in physics-based materials and processes models at different length and time scales and associated experimental research to understand material properties.
