This role contributes to REI’s success by shaping the end‑to‑end experiences for store teams and by deeply understanding operational complexity and translating it into intuitive, efficient, and well‑crafted digital products. This role will work closely with product managers, engineers, program managers, and store partners to deliver solutions that make daily store work simpler, faster, and more reliable. This is a senior individual contributor role with high ownership, broad influence, and the opportunity to define where design has the greatest impact across store operations. Store Back of House technology directly impacts how efficiently and confidently store teams do their jobs every day. This role’s work will improve operational clarity, reduce friction, and help store teams focus on what matters most—serving customers.

This role will have the chance to shape foundational systems, influence long‑term product strategy, and raise the bar for design quality across store technology.

Responsibilities and Qualifications Responsibilities

  • Leads UX and product design for one or more critical Back of House store technology products, from discovery through delivery and iteration
  • Translates complex operational workflows (inventory, fulfillment, tasking, labor, tools) into clear, usable, and scalable digital experiences
  • Drives human‑centered design practices by partnering closely with product and engineering throughout the product lifecycle
  • Communicates design intent through journey maps, service blueprints, workflows, wireframes, prototypes, and high‑fidelity designs
  • Advocates for design‑led decisions by clearly articulating user needs, tradeoffs, and recommendations to stakeholders at all levels
  • Contributes to and help evolve shared design systems, patterns, and standards to ensure consistency and quality across store tools
  • Balances strategic thinking with hands‑on execution, owning problems from concept to shipped experience
  • Continuously learns from store teams through research, field visits, usability testing, and feedback loops
  • Applies a data-driven approach to define an experience which integrates user feedback and business requirements.
  • Fosters REI’s culture, values and principles while setting new standards in executional and operational excellence. Defines design POV, standards and north star in collaboration with product, marketing, and engineering teams.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 6+ years of experience in product design, service design, UX design, or interaction design for complex digital products
  • Strong end‑to‑end design skills across discovery, interaction design, visual design, and prototyping
  • Experience designing operational, enterprise, or workflow‑heavy tools (retail, logistics, supply chain, or similar domains strongly preferred)
  • Proven ability to simplify complex systems into intuitive user experiences
  • Ability to plan and conduct user research and data to build a strategic point of view
  • Comfort working with ambiguity and influencing cross‑functional partners without formal authority
  • Strong storytelling and communication skills—able to clearly explain design decisions and rationale
  • Experience collaborating closely with product managers and engineers in agile product teams
  • Experience leading product direction and strategic thinking.
  • Deep understanding of design and prototyping tools such as Figma
  • Adept at utilizing design systems, best practices, accessibility guidelines, and human-centered design methodologies.
  • Ability to communicate complex interaction concepts clearly and persuasively to different audiences.
  • Strong organization, attention to details and time-management skills
  • A portfolio demonstrating excellent UX design skills for solving complex problems with clear results.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Design, HCI, Interaction or similar area, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing for retail store operations, inventory management, fulfillment, or labor tools
  • Experience conducting in‑context or field research with frontline users
  • Familiarity with design systems at scale and contributing to shared component libraries

Pay Range

$113,100.00 - $180,900.00 per year
