The Maintenance Operations Manager reports to the In‑Service Support Integrated Product Team (IS‑IPT) Program Manager and is responsible for leading operational and defect support across all aspects of Combat Systems for the Collins Class Submarines. The role includes providing direct support to scheduled and unscheduled maintenance periods to ensure sustained operational capability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and provide direction for the planning and delivery of operational maintenance activities supporting Collins Class Submarine Combat Systems.
  • Act as the accountable manager and primary customer interface for all operational defects (URDEFs) across the Collins Class Submarine fleet.
  • Serve as the key customer contact for the management and coordination of all planned and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Oversee the scheduling, coordination, and execution of maintenance activities to ensure delivery against agreed plans and priorities.
  • Responsible for all program maintenance System Health Indictors (SHI) performance and reporting.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with applicable policies, procedures, quality standards, directives, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure maintenance is conducted using approved and current technical publications, instructions, data, and authorised systems.
  • Verify that maintenance activities are correctly certified and accurately documented within relevant maintenance and configuration management databases.
  • Ensure the effective installation, maintenance, integration, and testing of Combat System equipment and systems.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain risk management systems, policies, procedures, and job safety assessments to support safe operations.
  • Apply, monitor, and continuously improve quality assurance systems and processes across all maintenance activities.
  • Conduct technical investigations and prepare detailed technical failure and defect reports as required.
  • Contribute to the development, monitoring, and reporting of maintenance progress, status, performance metrics, and maintenance error analysis.
  • Develop and deliver specialist and ongoing training to support workforce capability, skills sustainment, and team development.
  • Provide authoritative technical advice on Combat System equipment and systems, including defect diagnosis and repair strategies.
  • Undertake domestic and international travel as required to meet operational and program delivery requirements.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience working within the Australian Defence industry, preferably in submarine, maritime, or complex mission‑critical environments.
  • A recognised trade qualification and relevant licence in a related technical discipline (e.g. Electronics, Communications, Radar, or equivalent), sufficient to enable endorsement by applicable Australian Government regulatory authorities.
  • Proven experience identifying and implementing moderate improvements to processes, systems, or products to enhance performance, efficiency, or compliance within the work area.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage small projects, work packages, or defined processes within an area of responsibility, including planning, execution, and reporting.
  • Sound knowledge of, and ability to provide advice on, relevant Australian Standards, legislation, regulatory frameworks, and codes of practice.
  • Advanced understanding of complex equipment, technologies, and systems, including system interfaces, integration, alignment, and performance tolerances.
  • Strong understanding and practical application of technical theories and concepts related to radio frequency systems, networking, modems, and communications technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand the function and operation of complex systems in environments with limited access to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) training and technical publications.
  • Ability to analyse and determine fundamental relationships and dependencies between systems, technologies, organisations, and supporting business processes.
  • Proven capability to conduct technical investigations and produce clear, accurate, and authoritative technical failure and defect reports.
  • Experience working within, and applying, ISO‑aligned quality management systems and quality assurance frameworks.
  • Well developed computer literacy, including the use of maintenance management systems, Windows operating systems, and the Microsoft Office suite.
