General Summary:

At Qualcomm XR labs Europe, we’re a passionate team of engineers who want to change the world through virtual and augmented reality products and technologies. We develop state-of-the-art computer vision, deep learning, and graphics solutions to deliver ultra-optimized, power-efficient software and hardware to enable the intelligent perception of the world around us.

Our XR Labs engineers work on data acquisition and deep learning and computer vision models for self-perception including head tracking, hand gestures and tracking, as well as world perception where we apply 3D reconstruction and understanding of objects and environments including mapping and navigation. These algorithms allow intelligent head-worn XR devices to perform high-level perception functions. We design, prototype, optimize for Snapdragon XR2 and AR2 So Cs, and productize these algorithms through highly power-constrained platforms.

Qualcomm XR Labs Europe is rapidly expanding and seeking innovators who will create the new digital world. We have state-of-the-art facilities in Austria, France, the Netherlands, and Spain.

Responsibilities

• Candidates bring a deep understanding of computer vision and machine learning algorithms and technologies that are necessary building blocks of our perception systems.

• Interactive, real-time, and immersive systems, including hand tracking, pose estimation, object detection, sensor fusion and mathematical optimization

• Software design and implementations for real-time embedded and mobile platforms

• Be part of a world-class XR team researching and developing mobile Augmented and Virtual Reality enabling technology

• Development of efficient and accurate computer vision and machine learning solutions for XR hand tracking tasks

• Understand and analyze requirements for perception systems for XR platforms

• Collaborate across functional boundaries in defining architecture, APIs, design and schedule

• See your design in action on industry-leading chips embedded in the next generation of AR and VR devices, smartphones, and robotics

Critical “Must Have” skills/experience for role

• 5+ years of industry experience

• Experience in designing and implementing efficient ML inference pipelines on resource-constrained embedded hardware.

• Develop and integrate robust C/C++ low-level software for deploying ML models on microcontrollers, DSPs, and ML accelerators

• Strong understanding of 2D computer vision methods and math for deep learning including state-of-the-art backbones and methods, quantization, mathematical optimization

• Optimizing neural network models (e.g., quantization, pruning) for performance, memory, and power on edge devices.

• Experience using modern deep learning toolboxes (e.g. Py Torch, Tensor Flow), machine learning pipelines, model evaluation and data visualization

• Good understanding and strong knowledge in algorithms and statistics

• Good understanding and experience in math function optimization

• Be able to stay on top of state-of-the-art approaches

Preferred skills/experience for role

• Analyze and debug performance bottlenecks and power consumption across the hardware/software stack for ML workloads.

• Excellent math skills, including linear algebra, computational science and optimization.

• Experience in software development, including testing and debugging on XR devices, mobile platforms or other embedded systems

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field and 2+ years of Hardware Engineering, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related work experience. OR
  Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field and 1+ year of Hardware Engineering, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related work experience.
  OR
  PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field.

• 2+ years of experience with Machine Learning frameworks (e.g., Tensor Flow, Caffe, Caffe 2, Pytorch, Keras).

• 2+ years of experience in embedded system development and optimization with application to a specific problem domain in ML (e.g., NLP, multi-media).

• 2+ years of experience with one or more programming language suitable for machine learning (e.g., Python, R, C, C++)

• 2+ years of experience using statistics and probability (e.g., conditional probability, Bayes rule).

• 2+ years experience working in a large matrixed organization.

• 1+ year of experience with low level interactions between operating systems (e.g., Linux, Android, QNX) and Hardware.

• 1+ year of work experience in a role requiring interaction with senior leadership (e.g., Director and above).

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Applies Machine Learning knowledge to extend training or runtime frameworks or model efficiency software tools with new features and optimizations.

• Models, architects, and develops machine learning hardware (co-designed with machine learning software) for inference or training solutions.

• Develops optimized software to enable AI models deployed on hardware (e.g., machine learning kernels, compiler tools, or model efficiency tools, etc.) to allow specific hardware features; collaborates with team members for joint design and development.

• Assists with the development and application of machine learning techniques into products and/or AI solutions to enable customers to do the same.

• Develops, adapts, or prototypes complex machine learning algorithms, models, or frameworks aligned with and motivated by product proposals or roadmaps with minimal guidance from more experienced engineers.

• Conducts complex experiments to train and evaluate machine learning models and/or software independently.

Level of Responsibility:

• Works independently with minimal supervision.

• Decision-making may affect work beyond immediate work group.

• Requires verbal and written communication skills to convey information. May require basic negotiation, influence, tact, etc.

• Has a moderate amount of influence over key organizational decisions (e.g., is consulted by senior leadership to make key decisions).
