Stakeholder Management
Our mission at Oura is to empower every person to own their inner potential. Our award-winning products help our global community gain a deeper knowledge of their readiness, activity, and sleep quality by using their Oura Ring and its connected app. We've helped millions of people understand and improve their health by providing daily insights and practical steps to inspire healthy lifestyles.
Empowering the world starts with living our values and empowering our team. As a quickly growing company focused on helping people live healthier and happier lives, we ensure that our team members have what they need to do their best work — both in and out of the office.
We’re looking for a Staff Art Director, Product to own and evolve Oura’s visual language acrossillustration, photography direction, and iconography in the Oura App. This is a craft-and-systems-driven role for someone who can build coherence over time: setting a clear bar, defining principles, and guiding work from a trusted network of human creators (illustrators, photographers, and partners) with a decisive editorial eye. You’ll work at the intersection of product design, brand, marketing, and E-commerce bringing editorial sophistication while ensuring the work remains consistent, scalable, and distinctly “Oura.”
What you will do:
-
Own and evolve Oura’s product visual language for illustration, photography, and iconography—defining principles, guardrails, and a quality bar that scales across the app.
-
Build and steward illustration systems (style rules, usage guidance, levels of abstraction, emotional tone, and governance) that stay cohesive as products and narratives evolve.
-
Set photography direction and curation standards for product surfaces: subject matter, composition, lighting, tone, and sourcing—ensuring imagery feels human, contemporary, and trustworthy.
-
Partner closely with Product Design and Design Systems to ensure icons and illustrative assets support clarity, accessibility, and conceptual correctness in UI.
-
Develop clear creative briefs, references, and review rituals that help internal teams and external partners deliver consistent work with minimal iteration.
-
Operate with a freelance-first mindset: source, onboard, direct, and manage external talent; maintain organized handoffs; and keep quality high.
-
Advocate for human-made craft and responsible sourcing (illustration and photography), balancing speed with enduring quality.
This is a hybrid-remote role, with the expectation to work from our San Francisco offices at least half-time.REQUIREMENTS We would love consider you for our role if you have:
-
10 years of experience with at least 5 demonstrating ability to act as a high-influence individual contributor (Staff/Principal-style): setting direction, aligning stakeholders, and making durable decisions without formal authority.
-
A portfolio demonstrating system-level thinking across illustration and photography (not just one-off executions)—including how you established principles, maintained cohesion, and evolved a style over time
-
Deep experience working with freelancers and external partners: sourcing talent, writing briefs, directing creative, managing feedback loops, and delivering on deadlines.
Strong taste and judgment across:
-
Illustration systems (primary)
-
Photography direction (secondary)
-
Iconography (supporting)
-
Fluency collaborating with Product Designers and understanding how visuals support clarity, accessibility, and trust in UI contexts.
-
Excellent communication skills: you can explain the “why” behind decisions and give feedback that is both rigorous and respectful.
BENEFITS:
At Oura, we care about you and your well-being. Everyone here at Oura has a ring of their own and we are continually looking to improve employee health and add to our benefits!
What we offer:
-
Competitive salary and equity packages
-
Health, dental, vision insurance, and mental health resources
-
An Oura Ring of your own plus employee discounts for friends & family
-
20 days of paid time off plus 13 paid holidays plus 8 days of flexible wellness time off
-
Paid sick leave and parental leave
-
Amazing culture of collaborative and passionate coworkers
