Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is looking for a Staff Multidisciplinary Design Analysis and Optimization (MDAO) Engineer Level 5 to be an integral part of our multi-discipline engineering team for Advanced Weapons located in Northridge, CA.This will be 100% on-site at our Northridge, CA location.
Here at Advanced Weapons, you will be at the forefront of developing next generation solutions to protect technology for our nation’s warfighters. This position will require strong understanding of the impacts from changes in the system level requirements and architecture to the design and performance of the vehicle, to optimize the vehicle’s performance and meet potential objectives for the customer.
The MDAO Engineer plays a critical role in the design, analysis, and optimization of complex engineering systems. This position integrates advanced computational methods and engineering principles from multiple disciplines, ensuring that designs meet performance, cost, and safety requirements in an efficient and robust manner.
Roles & Responsibilities:
A successful candidate will have the qualities and essential functional expertise to:
- Develop and execute multidisciplinary analysis and optimization (MDAO) studies for diverse air vehicle concepts using advanced problem-solving tools.
- Support the MDAO team leader by identifying the scope required to meet all project requirements, with a focus on efficiency and operational availability.
- Validate schedule and staffing estimates for MDAO project activities.
- Cooperate and communicate status effectively with the MDAO team leader to provide them with assistance and technical support.
- Apply Python programming skills and proficiency with frameworks such as OpenMDAO for model integration and trade study automation.
- Implement and run trajectory optimization analyses utilizing tools such as Taos, Dymos, or similar platforms.
- Design and analyze systems architectures, supporting rapid assessment and iteration of concepts through trade studies and performance sensitivity analyses.
- Model aerodynamic, propulsion, and general vehicle subsystems (including sensors, warheads, etc.) to support end-to-end system simulation.
- Leverage statistical and gradient-based optimization techniques (e.g., SNOPT, IPOPT) to solve complex, constrained engineering problems.
- Communicate highly technical analysis findings and recommendations effectively to senior leaders and non-technical stakeholders.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate analytical models and support program decision making.

Basic Qualifications Staff MDAO Engineer Level 5:
- Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of twelve (12) years of MDAO or related engineering roles within aerospace, defense, or closely aligned industries OR a Master’s Degree with ten (10) years of experience OR a PhD with eight (8) years of experience
- Experience with aircraft or weapon design, layout, sizing and performance analysis tools with 6 -DOF simulations
- Strong code development on Linux/Windows using MATLAB, scientific Python (e.g., numpy, scipy), C++
- Strong foundation in systems architecture and rapid trade study analysis methods.
- Experience in statistical analysis and optimization, with emphasis on gradient-based methods and use of solvers (SNOPT, IPOPT, etc.).
- Strong communication skills to communicate complex technical information clearly to senior leadership and multi-disciplinary audiences.
- Ability to obtain a US Government Secret security clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current Active Secret clearance or higher with a Periodic Reinvestigation within the last five (5) years.
- Proven Weapon Systems Modeling experience
- Familiar with military aircraft or weapon design principles and tools
- Experience in aircraft and missile conceptual design that encompasses a full understanding of aerodynamics, mass properties (weigh, balance), propulsion, power, and flight controls across the range of expected flight conditions.
- Experience as a technical lead
Primary Level Salary Range: $177,000.00 - $265,000.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
