Northrop Grumman's Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a **Principal Communications Hardware Engineer OR Senior Principal Communications Hardware Engineer.**This position will be in our Avionics Integration organization and will be located in Palmdale, California or El Segundo, California depending upon the selected candidate’s preference.
This role is responsible for working within an Integrated Product Team (IPT) structure to perform engineering capture, build, integration, test, and maintenance of communications hardware in laboratory and field settings. This includes the specification and usage of specialized test and support equipment.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Designing of rack-based communication, test, support equipment, and cabling to meet system requirements, to include:Understanding and ability to perform electrical signal and power analysis at the rack level
- Developing engineering drawings in accordance with ASME and IEEE standards, including rack assembly drawings, interconnecting wiring diagrams, and custom cable assemblies
- Developing Bill of Material to support build of systems
- Specification of rack cabling (RF, optical, 1553, power) and cooling systems
- Developing and performing system verification procedures
- Installing communication, test, and support equipment in lab and field environments
- Providing lab, site integration, test, and maintenance support
- Participate in troubleshooting systems to resolve complex issues, interact and coordinate with responsible communications engineers responsible for sustaining communication sub-systems
- Preparing presentations, briefing stakeholders, and providing project status updates
The selected candidate will be required to work full-time, on-site at our facility. There is no remote / hybrid / telework available for this position. This position requires the ability to travel which may occasionally be more than 25% but will not be more than 40% of the time. Current work schedule is 4/10s. (Four days per week; 10 hours per day.)
This position may be filled at either the Principal Communications Hardware Engineer level OR the Senior Principal Communications Hardware Engineer level, depending upon the qualifications below.
Basic Qualifications for Principal Communications Hardware Engineer:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline and 5 years of related engineering experience; OR a Master’s degree in a relevant STEM discipline and 3 years of related engineering experience, OR a PhD in a relevant STEM discipline and 1 year of related engineering experience
- Demonstrated working knowledge of governing and industry standards to include MIL-STD-1553, MIL-STD-1760, MIL-STD-100G, and ASME Y14.100
- Ability to physically move up to 50 lbs
- Color vision to identify cables and wires
- Active DoD Secret clearance with investigation date within the last 5 years and ability to obtain a Top Secret/SCI once in role.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Special Program Access (SAP). This SAP must be obtained prior to commencement of employment and within a reasonable amount of time as determined by the company to meet its business needs.

- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline and 8 years of related engineering experience; OR a Master’s degree in a relevant STEM discipline and 6 years of related engineering experience, OR a PhD in a relevant STEM discipline and 4 year of related engineering experience
- Demonstrated working knowledge of governing and industry standards to include MIL-STD-1553, MIL-STD-1760, MIL-STD-100G, and ASME Y14.100
- Ability to physically move up to 50 lbs
- Color vision to identify cables and wires
- Active DoD Secret clearance with investigation date within the last 5 years and ability to obtain a Top Secret/SCI once in role.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Special Program Access (SAP). This SAP must be obtained prior to commencement of employment and within a reasonable amount of time as determined by the company to meet its business needs.
Preferred Qualifications for both levels:
- Active Do
D Top Secret clearance:
- Current applicable SAP access
- Working knowledge of various communication protocols including Ethernet, 1553 bus systems, and Fibre Channel
- Experience with drawing and release tools – (CATIA V5, Visio, Teamcenter Enterprise PLM).
- Working knowledge of communication engineering theory and RF systems
- Experience with production of complex systems
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Electrical Engineering.
- High attention to detail and emphasis on first time quality
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with an aptitude to learn new material quickly
Primary Level Salary Range: $114,000.00 - $171,000.00
Secondary Level Salary Range: $142,200.00 - $213,400.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
