Nokia is providing Software, IT equipment and Services at the cutting edge of network technology. Our scientists and engineers are innovating and developing future technologies to connect intelligence.

Powered by its R&D arm, Nokia Bell Labs, (with 10 Nobel Laureates, among many other things in its long history of scientific research since 1925) the company is at the forefront of creating the technologies that are at the heart of our connected lives.

In Bell Labs, the OSDR (Optical systems and devices research) Lab focuses on research aiming to design optical transmission systems and networks of the future, which will connect cities, countries and continents while offering higher capacities at reduced cost and environmental impact.

You have:

  • A solid background in mathematical analysis, linear Algebra, and optimization.
  • Math proficiency at the level of advanced undergraduate, or graduate majors in mathematics
  • Ability to read research papers on compressive sensing and assess its usefulness on the given data.
  • High-performance Matlab/Python/Cuda development.
  • Knowledge of Optimization, compressive sensing, linear algebra, and scientific computation.
  • Strong written and spoken communications skills.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.

If significant results are obtained, the student is encouraged and supported by Bell Labs researchers to publish her/his work in major conferences.

Optical fiber telecommunications have contributed to change our socio-economic landscape, by allowing interconnectivity among individuals and/or organizations on the global scale. To support these requirements, optical fiber systems are constantly being expanded and upgraded. Bell Labs hosts a world-class optical transmission lab, with a longstanding history of pioneering hero experiments in the past 30 years, which are widely recognized by the research community.

We are entering a fascinating chapter in the history of fiber-optic systems: not only the optical fiber offers the best capacity-distance trade-off for the communication but also it is an extremely fine acoustic sensor. Mechanical stress and strain, and bending change the amplitude, phase and state of polarization along the optical fiber, moreover, the geometrical configuration of the laid down fiber spans can be designed at will, so that we can construct a distributed network of fiber sensors to monitor seismic vibrations. These techniques already have existing monitoring applications in the oil industry or in civil engineering, and many promising new applications reusing already deployed telecom infrastructure are foreseen, as future smart cites and in-depth network monitoring and control.

Our department in Bell Labs is a world leader of fiber-based distributed fiber sensing (DFS), leveraging advanced techniques from signal processing and coherent transceivers, to develop intelligent systems capable of monitoring complex environments (cities, ports, railroads) to enable operators to better control and optimize all kinds of networks.

Our internship proposal is about implementing the compressive sensing techniques in the acquisition of the sparse data collected by distributed fiber sensors, to filter out irrelevant information. This will be based on the feasibility study we have already carried out in 2025. This is instrumental for managing the huge amount of raw data that is generated by fiber sensing.
