Job Summary

We are seeking a Matte Painting Supervisor to support our upcoming animated feature film. The Matte Painting Supervisor works inside of NAS to lead the matte painting team on a project, partnering with show leadership to build engaging digital environments that tell our story. The team will create skies, background environments, set extensions, embellishments of CG renders, and full one‑off locations that integrate seamlessly into the final film.

What You’ll Do:

• Lead a team of Matte Painters and Technical Artists, casting work appropriately with an eye on schedule and providing daily creative and technical feedback

• Collaborate with the VFX Supervisor, Head of Environments, Production Designer, Art Director, and other show leadership to establish the visual style and quality standards for matte painting and environment projections

• Supervise the creation of high-quality matte paintings and digital environments that align with the film’s art direction and integrate seamlessly with CG renders and compositing

• Create or refine selected matte paintings and environment projections as needed—particularly complex, hero, or reference‑setting work—to help establish the quality bar, style, and technical approach for the team

• Help define DMP workflows and toolsets in collaboration with Environment, Layout, Lighting, Compositing, Technical Supervisor, and pipeline teams

• Work closely with Production and Environment leadership to plan and track DMP work, providing input on complexity, timelines, and priorities

• Review work in context, giving clear, constructive feedback to ensure visual and technical excellence, consistency, and strong storytelling

• Evaluate the skills of existing show artists, contribute to artist development, and participate in recruiting and onboarding new talent

• Help document DMP workflows, processes, and technology, and stay current with industry trends and emerging tools

What You’ll Need:

• Extensive experience in digital matte painting or environment creation for feature animation, VFX, or high‑end series, including time in a Lead or Supervisory role

• A strong portfolio/reel demonstrating high-quality matte painting and environment work with integrated 2D, 2.5D, and CG elements

• Proficiency with Photoshop and Nuke, plus working knowledge of 3D tools (e.g., Maya, Houdini, Blender) and modern rendering workflows

• Strong understanding of perspective, parallax, lighting, atmosphere, and color theory

• Experience developing and maintaining workflows in coordination with pipeline and technical teams

• Excellent problem‑solving and organizational skills, with the ability to manage complex projects and team needs simultaneously

• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written; able to translate high‑level feedback into clear, actionable direction for artists

• Proven leadership and interpersonal skills; able to foster a respectful, collaborative and inclusive team dynamic

• Willingness to embrace constructive feedback and receptive to new ideas and iterative change

This role is based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Hybrid Role (Minimum of 3 days a week in the office).

At NAS, we carefully consider a wide range of compensation factors to determine your compensation. We rely on market indicators and consider your specific job family, background, location, skills, and experience. The overall market range for this role is typically $180K-$230K CAD. This reflects total compensation; we do not have stock options.
